A 66 year old female substitute teacher was pushed to the floor by a large 16 year old male student while other students cheered him on. Is it time for Emoticonarents to start paying the price for the disrespectful and violent students they force teachers to educate ? Are some parents just glad to send someone else their problem to deal with?  4951

I was appalled when I saw the video. No one came to her rescue and the other students were cheering him on. All because she took his cell phone from him. 4951

@Lillia02l:  I am sure its because they didn't want retaliation from a gang!  that poor lady.  I hope that kid gets smacked to the fullest of the law!

@angiekaye: the news stated they suspended him and would not be allowed back to that school again. He may possibly have to attend alternative school. I think he school go to jail. 4951

ABC was reporting that he could be arrested and charged with endangering and assaulting the elderly. Which holds a stiff sentence in Texas. 4951

He should absolutely go to jail. The kid was massive and using his size to intimidate her. That poor woman. Kids need to be scared of what will happen if they treat an adult that way. His mom should beat him to a pulp. 4951

On Channel 2, the anchors were criticizing the other kids for just grabbing phones and videoing the incident and not trying to help her. He was massive and might have hurt more than the teacher if they tried, so capturing it on video just might have been all they could do to help. It have authorities the necessary evidence they needed so everyone would know exactly what happened, instead of a he said she said conflicting story situation.

Am I the only one thinking "Maybe she should not have appropriated another individuals personal property" ?? Look at the video, policy be damned.... (which is zero legal standing to confiscate property) she had to consider what she was working with.I wouldn't go into a bar and throw a drink in the face of the biggest guy in there and not expect to get laid out...Personal responsibility is a real b...All of that is not to say I support him dropping her in any way, but people on both sides need be responsible for the actions leading up to that. 4951

@ MTechnique:It seems it was mentioned somewhere  that she retired from this school so it appears "she did know what she was working with". My guess is she gave a student more credit than he deserved in this particular incident.   4951

@MTechnique: MY jaw dropped when I read your response.  Back in my day he would have gotten pops at school, pops again when he got home from school, and he sure as heck would never have done that again.  There is NO responsibility anymore.  That woman is trying to teach a class.  She has no time for his shenanigans!  And he should go to jail for his attack on her.

@donnatella:  I agree,  the boy was huge, I really don't blame the others for not trying to stop him.

I haven't watched the video, so I'm making assumptions based on other comments. The school has a no cell phone policy, right? What were the other students using to take the video that will in-turn be used to help the police? What is the purpose of this no-cell phone policy? Why is it being enforced in this way? By confiscation of property? If a student is being disruptive in class, send the student to the principal's office. With all of his belongings. Most of us provide our children with cell phones so that they can contact us in case of an emergency, but we teach our children to keep the cell phone in the purse or backpack unless they really need it. I'm guessing the real issue is that he had the cell phone out and was being disruptive. 4951

I was a high school teacher before moving here last fall and hope to become one again.  I will tellyou that although most  young people are fantastic individuals, there are those you are very crudeand disrespectful of everyone!  There are those who treat their own peers with contempt and willchallenge anyone in authority regardless of age or sex.  I have seen six-foot plus athletic coaches challenged by such students.  These students know how intimidated staff can be and use this to their advantage.  It is a rare school district or administrator that will stand behind their staff.  Send an unruly student to the office, and the administration may well question the teacher on their classroom management skills.  The students act out because they CAN.  There are often very littleconsequences if any.Teachers are in a damed-if-you-do and damed-if-you-don't situation regarding cell phones.  If anadministrator comes by and a cell phone is is use by a student, the teacher will be held accountable.  If the teacher attempts to abide by the school policy, we have the situation as described in the original scenario. The student and parents need to be held accountable.  Until our school systems getcomfortable with imposing consequences for actions and standing up for their staff, the situation will not improve. In regard to the comment about the cell phone being "personal property".  Until the student canlearn to use his cell phone at the appropriate time in appropriate places, perhaps he should notbe allowed to bring one to school, or he and his cell phone can be homeschooled and his parentscan see if instruction is compatible  with cell phone use. 4951
