It seems like it is always something around here. I've got one warehouse guy out for a dentist appointment he forgot to tell us about, sent me a text 30 minutes before we opened.... He'll be out a half day and totally screws the warehouse.I've got a mechanic that no showed this morning, come to find he packed his toolbox and tools Friday and said nothing to anyone. Gave him a call to find he took a job elsewhere for more money. No notice, no warning, nada. He says "I've been asking for a raise for a year, so I left"Hard to give a guy a raise that has been 20-30mins late every single day for the last year...Sigh... 4951

Some people do not have work ethic!  It is sad because it really disrupts businesses. 4951

I've spent the whole day today hiring for a warehouse worker and a mechanic. It is staggering how many people replied to my ads on Craigslist alone, and are EAGER to do anything to get a job...Meanwhile I keep employees on that couldn't care less about keeping their jobs. What is this world coming to? 4951

That's chickens*&^.I bet he thought he was really sticking it to you. Probably felt like a real man when you called him and asked him where he was.I'd have more respect for a guy that says "Look - the thought of coming in one more day makes my stomach turn. So I won't be back on Monday". 4951

The mechanic that quit was a loss no doubt, he was a really good hand, hence why we put up with his constant tardiness. That said I nor the owner would give him a raise until his attendance was in order, and he knew that. This fact not withstanding he knew he had a good raise coming. We just gave him 3 personal days off last week, WITH PAY, so he could tend to some "family business" I think its pretty clear the "family business" was seeking alternative employment. That's probably what bothers me the most.I understand wanting to leave for a better paying job, I'd never hold anyone back. Just give me the notice, even if its only a few days. 4951

No offense, but hiring people on Craiglist may be your problem! That may be why you get people who are constantly late and just get up and leave.  4951

The mechanic job is another story, but the warehouse position is pretty entry level. Starting pay is 9-10 an hour, you're not going to be the best and brightest for that wage. The pay is something I have very little control over though, and the owner often thinks you should be able to find people that will work very hard for minimal money. Fact is if you want really good employees you need to make sure their needs are met. That however is another discussion entirely.I've worked very hard for him and nestled my way into a comfortable position with an unfortunately immense and every growing list of responsibilities but I am well compensated and I can't really complain. I have access to every facet of the mans work and personal life and he trusts me implicitly with his business. 4951

When I was working, if someone gave us notice, we usually let him/her collect their stuff and escorted them off the property.  A discontented employee can spread a lot of bad feelings in two weeks. 4951

This thread is the story of my life here at job A. I hope everything smoothes out and you can find some decent help. Just try not to let the stress get to you so much. It's bad for your health.
