Was driving down the wrong side of the freeway and hit someone head on last night. I have never in my life heard of so many drunk drivers driving down the wrong side of the freeway. Its like you shouldn't even leave your house after dark. Your gonna either get hit by a drunk driver or robbed. What is wrong with people. So many drunk drivers. Makes me sick. Ok rant over ... 4951

This is one I have to agree on. I refuse to drive at night around here if I have a choice, because it's just too great of a chance of encountering drunk driver. 4951

Why is there so many drunk drivers here ? Its crazy. Do you think its because there to easy on drunks when there arrested ? It seems like they help the drunks. If you walk in the gas station there is huge coolers with cans of beer just ready to drink. Isnt that just encouraging it. The thought of my kids driving here terrifies me. Between the crazy drivers and drunks im worried. I know you have to let go and let your kids live and let them drive but im scared to death letting them drive here. Its sad we have to even say we won't go out at night because of crime and drunks. I know people that were born and raised here think this is the greatest place on earth but being from another state coming here I am shocked at the crime and drunk drivers. Its terrible. 4951

Can someone please tell how they even get on the freeway to go in the wrong direction? When I hear of this happening that always comes to mind. 4951

You have got to be so drunk out of your mind to drive onto the freeway the wrong way. Can you imagine driving on the freeway seeing headlights coming towards you.  4951

@2danes: They are not easy on drunks when arrested.  Laws are not easier than other states.  I grew up here and started driving here, and am not more nervous about my kids driving here than any other big city.  I don't want them driving after 10:00 pm or so, but don't see any reason for them to at 16 anyway.  Houston is the fourth largest city in the US.

When ever we drive anywhere here I feel myself tensing up when ever we drive through intersections or when we are on the freeway. We were on the 59 a few weeks ago and a old truck way over stacked with furniture not tied down is a few cars in front of us.They had a recliner on top and it started moving and I said it's gonna fall and then all the furniture fell all over the freeway and everyone is slamming there brake on and the semi truck next to us just swerves over and almost slams into us. I really almost **it my pants. Driving on the freeways here is so scary. 4951

Why is it that people always use the reason for bad crime and drunk drivers being that it's a big city? so is it expected because its a big city, I guess if your from here and it's all you have known then it's normal to you.  4951

A quick google search shows 1,115 fatalities resulting from crashes involving intoxicated drivers in Texas in 2010.  California shows 1,768 in the same year.  I don't think Houston and Texas in general are that much worse or better than other states.     4951

What does California have to do with this ? that's 2010. The news just said a few weeks ago that Houston has the highest drunk driving accidents then anywhere else.  4951

STATE OF TEXAS RANKED NUMBER ONE IN U.S. DRUNK-DRIVING FATALITIES
Texas has plenty to brag about. But the state ranked number one in an area many Texans are unlikely to be proud of-drunk driving fatalities.
According to Automotive Discovery, an online resource for automobile news and technology, the state of Texas currently has the highest rate of drunk-driving fatalities in the country. Approximately 43 percent of automobile deaths in Texas are linked to drunk or impaired driving.
Harris County, Texas, has the most drunk-driving fatalities in the state. Automotive says that the driving statistics for Houston have been compared to a "highway slaughter."
The reasoning behind the high number of drunk-driving fatalities, some say, is due to the state's failure to enact many of the National Transportation Safety Board safety recommendations. Others indicate that it's a lack of sobriety checkpoints.
Despite media reports highlighting deaths that occur on our nation's roadways, the war on drunk driving has, in fact, come a long way. Thirty years ago, drunk driving was not taken seriously in this country and drunk drivers-even repeat offenders-were given a slap on the hand and the go-ahead to get back behind the wheel of a car.
Luckily, society today handles drinking and driving much differently and drivers' intolerance for the behavior has most likely saved countless lives. Campaigns and organizations against drunk driving, such as the prominent Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a non-profit organization founded in 1980 that works to combat drunk driving, help to tackle the problem. States' efforts to pass laws increasing consequences and penalties for those that decide to get behind the wheel and drive after consuming a few drinks also play a part.
However, it remains obvious that states, including Texas, still need to strengthen their efforts to win the war on drunk driving. 4951

I have seen people in the middle of the day, going to a gas station and buying 1 tall beer. Then they get in the car and open up and drive off. Drunks take a wrong turn and just keep driving. I have never seen it so bad in this big city on the freeways. 4951

I never said im unhappy. I am just stating the truth. It cracks me up the minute anyones says anything negative about Houston the first thing you say is then leave or why are you here then. I don't think any one here doesn't think there is a bad problem with crime and drunk drivers. 4951
