I run across this periodically while doing genealogy research.  It is not unusual to find marriages between first cousins.  It is believed that about 80% of the world's population has at least one set of ancestors that were first cousins.  It wasn't until the late 1800s that it became recognized as "probably not a good idea" in the USA.  However,  current laws in some states still allow marriage between first cousins. My first thought was that it was now just happening in the south (forgive me wonderful south!), but the map above shows that's not true. What do you think about marriage between first cousins? I had a couple of cousins that I wouldn't have minded banging when we were younger! 4951

the reason it was not acceptable is because it was noted that when family members married  & had children if there were any  problems in the  blood line like cancer ,  sickle cell , thyroid , etc. that the outlook for any children born of a union between  close relatives doubled & tripled  the chance of the children having the problems.   4951

@WJo:  Oh, I understand the reasons why it's not a good idea.  I was just wondering why so many states still allow it. I know two married couples that are first cousins.  One couple has no children.  The other does.  Their kids seem OK, but their grandchildren have genetic problems.

My gg-grandparents and ggg-grandparents were first cousins.  Kinchloe married Davis then Kinchloe married Davis....'spains why I'm a mess!!!  But, the map shows that in Texas it's illegal.  I know of a couple that did get a marriage license and they answered that question truthfully, that they are first cousins.  Yet they received a marriage license. I know of another couple who are 1st cousins, have 4 children but never married. She doesn't use his name but she does call him her 'husband', so that makes it common law.  Yes, the kids are weird, 3 of them seem very slow, one seems normal.  It's a messed up situation. Nothing can prevent a common law marriage between first cousins, not even siblings.  If they are going to screw around, they don't need a license. 4951

I see nothing wrong with marrying your first cousin...or your sister for that matter. Sorry, I just don't. You can't help who you fall in love with, right?  Isn't that the homosexual argument?  As for kids being messed up...well, we have kids messed up from all sorts of situations that have nothing to do with sibling relationships. 4951

Looks like this discussion is about to take a detour

@mm4731: Next thing you know, some whacked out person will try and make marrying a sheep legal.  I mean, you can't help who/what you fall in love with, right?

@BooBear: It's an Aggie thing.  The sheep in Aggieland are better looking than their women so the men connect to the sheep.
