Has anyone here attended an event at the Community Center? Aside from the occasional town hall or planning meeting hosted by elected officials which often happen in the middle of the week and at times which are virtually impossible to attend by those that have a job, a life, a wife, kids or a dog, this building is almost completely vacant. The total cost of the community center was $3 Million which included all construction, state of the art audio visual equipment, a full kitchen, and plenty of meeting space. The money came from a few different sources including Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone and City of Houston Parks bond money. *1With a space this wonderful you might be asking yourself why is it not frequently used? The answer is that the cost of renting space, even for a non profit organization is outrageous; $300 for the first three hours and $50 for each additional hour. Cynthia Calvert, (owner of the Tribune) wrote an excellent piece describing the bureaucratic barricades resident Jan Fish, President of the Kingwood Garden Club went through to inquire about this center's use. The hype about it was a load of crap. They made it sound like it was going to be available to tons of groups and always have something cool going on for all ages. What a colossal waste of money. 4951

Why the heck did they tear down a perfectly good building for this? A simple remodel was all the library needed. 4951

I'd like to see them convert it to shared office space.  Imagine, companies could have locations everywhere, reducing the need for long commutes yet provide a social environment for workers.  they are doing this in other places.Granted there might be some issues with proprietary information.   4951

I agree!  It should be for any legitimate organization free or a small fee. After all, it is called "Community"Center.  I never understood the library being torn down & spending 3 million on a new building. It happened so quickly that someone must have gained from it.They do  have senior activities mostly free & that is good, but these exsorbitant charges for groups is ridiculous....like the Kingwood Garden Club free...they do a lot of good in Kingwood. 4951

And the new library is much more impersonal than the old one.I stopped in to get a drink of water while walking, and not one of the three "workers" inside acknowledged me at all. Not very community oriented staff, that's certain. 4951

I tried to rent a classroom there to teach a CHL class.  The rate for the room wasn't (too) insane... they wanted $100.00 for 4 hours if I remember correctly.  What was absolutely ridiculous was that they required that I hire a TX commissioned security officer to patrol the parking lot for the entire time my class was in session.Right.  Hire a rent-a-cop to patrol a parking lot with 4 cars in it for 4 hours.  Great plan.  I booked a room at Lonestar College for $100.00 instead. 4951

@FairieMae: This is a bit off topic but I want to comment on your complaint. I used to work in a facility that was often used by 'walkers' for bathroom and water stops. We were conducting business and trying to work, just like the folks at the library, and ended up having to stop and accommodate these folks. It gets old after awhile...not to mention the toilet plunging and cleanup after these people that 'assumed' they were our customers just because they darkened our door. I'm all about customer service but please remember that the library is not there to serve your need for thirst. Carry a water bottle. JMO

I stopped for water at the community center. The young people working there were doing NOTHING but playing with their phones. If I had been near the library, I would have been able to get a drink and a book! And some pleasant human interaction. And, BTW, I do carry a water bottle. 4951
