It was on the news this morning and also just now..... 35 year old man attacked by several pits and pit mixes in Houston. Houston Council needs to enact heavy fines and jail time for irresponsible owners of this breed and also the pit mixes. Many other communities have already passed legislation to protect their citizens. Sorry to you pit lovers on this board BUT the safety of people is MORE important. The fatal attack statistics on this breed are irrefutable. 4951

It's not about the breed. It's about the owners. How they were raised. I've had 2 pits and have been around plenty, none of which have attacked anything or anybody. Just like a child if they are raised wrong they will end up in jail or dead as attackers or murderers. Any dog (or animal) no matter the breed will protect itself if threatened and in a corner as will a human.

The breed is dangerous. That is undeniable. I agree the owners are to blame for the way they treat and handle their dogs, but they are so destructive.  4951

Also, who can say what type of dog you can have in your home? I pay property taxes as you do. This was supposed to be a free country. If anyone would try to take my pup away they got another thing coming. Raccoons attack people and some still rehabilatate them. I was bitten by a chihuahua, should they be banned as well? 4951

It's not about the breed.

@Drewdogwood: Ummmm...Lots of stats show it is the breed.  Regardless, what's the point?  You can get a great dog that isn't a pit (and without the stigma attached to it).

@Drewdogwood: Did the chihuahua kill you? Would you be confortable if I was your neighbor and owned a siberian tiger that I let roam around in the yard?

Haha comparing a dog to a threatened species that you don't play with or love on? But either way if you had a permit to do so yes do what you please. It's your home. It requires yearly checks on the premise that you must have the land and cages that protect the animal and the public. I'm telling you right now if you were to be around pitbulls and to meet mine and the ones I've been around you would probably change your mind. Sure there's other dogs out there. But if you've actually been around pitbulls and seen their playful nature and loving nature you'd change your mind. I ride long distance bikes for the ms150. I've been chased by numerous dogs. And 1 has been a pitbull. Any protective dog will attack. Many attacks with all dogs have been the humans fault overstepping their bounds like as I'm riding too close to a fence for example. But we don't live in a communist state. They can't tell us what breed of dog we can or cannot have. 4951

As for it being about "the owners" instead of the breed, then a LOT of pit owners have issues.  Wonder why that particular breed is attractive to a certain "type" of owner.http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics.php 4951

I have been around pitbulls. That is exactly the reason why I stay as far awa from them as possible. My relative was attacked and her hand was severely injured. She was lucky the problem wasn't more serious only because of her quick thinking. They are bad news. I don't care how much you love them. they have the potential to kill. Most other dogs do not.  4951

A few of my friends have pits and swear by them. But I would never want my kids around one, much less own one. I am biased, had an experience with them when I was younger. 4951

Let's just say the original poster of this thread has some type of vendetta against this breed. He/she always posts one article and then usually never speaks again.

81% of attacks that induce bodily harm76% of attacks to children87% of attack to adults72% of attacks that result in fatalities81% that result in maimingEmbody 9.2%+ of the total dog populationSo, it's either the breed or the type of person that chooses pits over other breeds?  I think it's mostly the breed. 4951
