My neighbor told me he killed a coral snake in his backyard. I read that mothballs are effective but I have dogs. Are they toxic and how do I put them out there? I opened the box and the smell nearly bowled me over. Can i put some in ziplocs and put them on the other side of the fence? This is my first year in Kingwood and I'm clueless about the wildlife here. 4951

I wouldn't worry for a minute about coral snakes and I certainly wouldn't kill one.  They are ridiculously shy and very docile...but they are a member of the cobra family so don't EVER try to handle one.  I've seen a few while walking my dogs between Bear Branch and Kings Forrest and they are always in a hurry to get out of the way.Copperheads can cause some problems because they can be very hard to see and you could inadvertently step on one and get bitten.  It's pretty hard to miss a coral and they'll vacate quickly if left alone. 4951

www3.ag.purdue.edu/e ntm/wildlifehotline/ Pages/pesticides.asp x@Ally Snake Away granules also contain Napthalene, so they are just as bad as moth balls. The best way to keep snakes away is to clear away anyplace they may hide like woodpiles, heavy brush, etc.   Good advice for living in Texas: Never reach into a place you can't see (corner of a shed, behind bushes, behind things), and keep a shovel handy for chopping off snakes' heads. 4951

@shodan66:  If I find a poisonous snake in my yard, it's dead.  I've never found any coral snakes in my yard, but I've found several copperheads and a small eastern diamondback rattler.  Garter snakes are non-poisonous and get a free pass.

@newkwmom: FIFY???There are lots of really good non-venomous snakes.  They eat bugs, mice, and many other pests.  We just caught a hog nose at the YMCA a few weeks ago.  Played with him for a minute, then sent him on his way.Only four venomous snakes in Texas.  Coral, Rattlesnake (several subs-species), Cottonmouth, Copperhead.  Each of these are readily identifiable. www.texaspoison.com/ snakes.asp

@salth2o: You left off other snakes.  The king snake gets its name from preying on other snakes.  Even snake haters should love the king snake...which we have plenty of around here.

In all fairness, there are non-poisonous King snakes that look similar to the coral snake.  King snakes often eat other snakes so they are good to have around.  Here are some coral snakes:Sometimes the colors (particularly yellow) is subdued, like this one......Here is a King snake...........The old rhyme works well:If red touches yella,Beware of this fella. (coral snake)If red touches black, put this fella back. (King snake) 4951

I didn't know some snakes ate snakes! They still scare me, never have liked them and I'm a huge animal lover. I'll educate myself and kids on the kind of snakes we have here in our area.  Thank you for sharing the link (info)! 4951

@newkwmom:   King snakes are definitely a friend to humans.  Here are a couple having dinner.Note:  They are both eating rattlers.  King snakes can be different colors and patterns in different parts of the world.  Around the south US, they will be the ring combination of black, red, yellow@Shodan66:  Thanks for mentioning corn snakes.  We didn't have those in LA (that I know of), but I can see what you mean about their coloration.

I had a coral snake in my yard last year. The reason I saw him was because my boxer was enthusiastically stomping the poor thing as he struggled to get away. I didn't have a shovel handy, so all I could do was throw my cup of morning coffee on him & he promptly exited the yard lol. 4951
