Had HP for years, now have a Lenovo desktop and an Asus pad.  Both work fine.  I think these days they are all pretty generic, comes down to what you want in it. 4951

lenovo is the company that made ibm laptops and they bought the ibm designs...asus is pretty much a generic computer maker. both are supposed to be decent. i've had friends that have had good luck with the asus and if the two processors are the same, i think i'd go with the asus since it is slightly faster clocking speed. the size of the drive in a laptop doesn't matter all that much since a smart user will get  two, yes 2, external hard drives and use those to store your stuff on, the absolute same in each one so you have backup. redundancy is the key to not losing things when a drive goes bad and they do often go bad these days. that way if you have trouble with the lap top, you unplug the externals and either restore to a previous time or do a complete restore back to factory spec. at that point the laptop is just like it was when you pulled it out of the box brand new. you then plug the drives back in and voila! you have all your stuff still. in fact you can install the programs themselves on externals and run them from the external drive. good luck with your choices 4951

Currently have a lenovo desktop and DD has a laptop. No hardware issues so far, but DD's laptop is less than 1 year old. My desktop is 4 years, runs 24X7 and had had no issues.

@ProblemAgain: Your strategy will work but IMHO it's less hassle to just pick up a NAS that supports RAID 1.  Netgear has one with 8TB total storage for $199 but there are a ton to choose from on the market.
For the non-geeks that don't care to google, a device that supports Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) has multiple hard-drives that function as one logical drive.  Specifically with RAID 1 the data is mirrored between disks so that there are physically two copies in case one disk gives up the ghost.  Plug the Network-attached Storage (NAS) device into your network...some have wireless capability...and then set it up so that your computer backs up its data to it regularly.  You can pretty much put it on a bookshelf and forget about it. 4951

@shodan66: the reason i like the independent externals is the ease of use. you can watch for a sale and get a 2 tb external drive as low as 70 bucks...so figure 2 is 140 and you have all that extra space to store things like movies, music and anything else you might want...

@shodan66:

Even though you said that was for "non geeks" I still have NO idea what you said. @problemagain tried to walk me through getting stuff off some broken computers in my garage but I still don't really understand what ?he/she? said. They still sit. 4951

@BooBear: He/she is just saying that you can buy an external drive that has built in redundancy.  Better if you get one with wireless so you can access it from any pc and use it for backing up stuff or as a media server.
You can also plug one of these suckers in advanced wireless routers.  It's a good idea. 4951
