I am looking for a pediatrician for our soon to be born baby. I've heard of Humble Pediatrics, but I was wondering if anyone had another pediatrician they would recommend? Also, my doctor suggested we interview a few doctors. I've never interviewed a doctor before and it seems a little weird. Did anyone else do this? What kind of questions should I ask? 4951

Seeing a pediatrician before a baby is born just seems weird to me Emoticon It's really not that big of a deal unless you have special needs that require specialization.

We went off of a referral from my sister, who has a girl 6 months older than mine. She loved the doctor and we do as well.
It's Dr. Butler at Humble Pediatrics, btw. 4951

I have three boys who all go to Dr. Stanley at TX Childrens Pediatrics in Kingwood. I hear that all of the doctors there are wonderful but can only speak for Dr. Stanley. He is so gentle with the kids and jokes with them.  4951

Love Dr. Hassell and Dr. Barnhart with Pediatric Associates of Kingwood.  My son was born with a hole in his heart and both Dr's were great in getting up in to TCH quickly.  We spent a lot of time at TCH for the first 2 years.  Just can't say enough about how they handled everything.All the Dr. there are good, imo.  Their number is 281-359-1000  They are located just across WLH bridge if you are leaving Kingwood and heading toward 1960.  They are at the 2nd light on the rightEmoticon

@Fallon:

Dr. Barnhart isn't taking new patients. Emoticon

But...everyone at Kingwood Pedi. is awesome. As far as interviewing before baby comes, I didn't find it necessary. However, you do need to give the hospital the name and number of the practice you would like to use. Someone from the practice you choose will come see baby in the hospital.

I accidentally gave them the wrong phone number at the hospital. It was a very rushed thing as **** hit the fan very quickly. Anyway, a pediatrician came from the mistaken practice and I was none too impressed. Things were so crazy the first few days home that I had to take baby back to said practice for her initial checkup. After that, I switched to Kingwood Pedi.

I don't think you need to know ahead of time who you want to use forever, but you should have a good idea of at least what facility you want to use.

We see Dr. Chin and love her. She's more laid back and as a first time mom I really appreciated that. She's so calm and reassuring about things. She's helped me to not freak out about every little thing. She also tells me what I need to hear. But in a nice way! 4951

We use Dr Ashley Cox at kingwood pediatrics-tch. But as @taramay mentioned, everyone there is great. My only complaint is that sometimes you have to schedule pretty far out for a wellcheck visit. I really like that they have a "well" entrance and a sick entrance.

We had our babies in the med center-womens hospital so we could not get the dr from kingwood pedi to visit. We had to select one from the hospital or close by to do the checkup while at the hospital. No big deal. We had our first visit with our pedi for the follow up visit-3days out of hospital. 4951

Thanks for the suggestions. @aggiebutterfly  That's where we will be delivering. Did you have a good experience there? I have heard mixed reviews. I heard they are not natural birth friendly there. 4951

I see no reason not to interview a pediatrician.  Our situation was different.  our Adoption Agency told us to get one so when the birth mother had the baby he could look over the medical history to see if there were any red flags.  Also, you get to know what style the pediatrician is.  Our pediatrician was firm on certain things like when to get rid of the pacifier.  Our sweet but stubborn son would wake us every hour because his pacifier would fall out and was not physically able to put it back in.  We would get no sleep.  Our pediatrician told us to cut it up and get rid of it.  It only took one day for our son to get used to not having the pacifier and we finally got our sleep!  We needed that kind of advice!  Some people may prefer a loosey-goosey type of doctor.  So interviewing helps you to decide what style you like best. 4951

@dotti573:
I only know of Barnhart not taking new patients. If your Dr. isn't available for a sick visit, someone else will see them. As for well checks, you can schedule it with whoever you want, but I only use Dr. Chin because I like her and she knows my child better than any of the others.

I also LOVE that there is a completely separate entrance and area for well checks. There's also a separate room in the sick area for babies.

Also, the reason I didn't do any interviews with individual Dr.'s before the baby was born was because I was working full time up until the day before she was born. It was one of the things on my to do list that didn't get done. In my defense, I have friends in the medical community here and they were the ones to give me the thumbs up on who I ended up picking. They also were able to guide me away from a couple of people they didn't think I'd like. 4951

@taramay:
thanks for the update.  Because we haven't had in insurance for a while we have been using the nextcare clinic and haven't been there in a couple years.  We used to have Dr. Gilley but she retired.  I just got insurance at my new job in January and luckily we haven't had to use the doctor yet.  I don't know if we would still be considered an existing patient.  I think I will call and find out. 4951

Another thing to consider which was also the clincher for me was if the clinic was open on Saturdays. I liked that they had all my son's information right there as opposed to going to these urgent care clinics.   Especially with a newborn, I cannot tell you how often we would go see the pediatrician on a Saturday.  It was peace of mind.  I am not sure if any of the pediatricians around here offer that option where they are open on Saturday mornings.  Anyway, food for thought! 4951

I think they are open for limited hours on saturday. Don't think they have a full staff, but I believe there is someone there. They also have a 24hr. on call you can use. I've used it a few times a day it's been super helpfull.
