@jpgurl  so did y'all contract just the plumbing?  I remember you saying that there was wood rot from the shower pan being installed incorrectly years and years ago. So you guys gutted and totally revamped. Did you make your own plan or did you have someone design that for y'all? Just curious. We really want to do this too.Â
@cgm10sne1: No contractor at all- doing it ourselves. DH is an engineer and extremely talented at DIY. I'm the grunt- but excellant at painting an now tiling and grouting ( if the surface is level.
We had 2 contractors out to bid. The first one wanted $14,000 just for the demo and shower install. He gave us the idea to NOT replace the tub- just make a giant shower. Fine by me I love giant showers! The 2cd one wanted 20,000- for the demo, shower, floor and sinks. He turned us onto this wonderful product -WEDI board as an underlayment. Dh designed the rest- totally redid the plumbing so now we will have 2 shower heads- one for a rainshower and one hand held mounted to the wall. He designed and built a bench just outside the shower in the wet dry area- there will be no door- it's a walk in shower. We are hiring out the glass half wall between the shower and sink area- it's a shop on 494- I believe it's called 494 Glass. They took our giant mirror and cut it into 3 pieces- dh was impressed with their work and service ( very rare for dh to be impressed).
I'm fairly good at following instruction in DIY projects but no way could I manage this myself. Dh said tonite this has been the most complicated project for us to date. The original builders did a bad job- walls not square, floors not square or level, drain in shower not sealed. Whoever did the pipe actually didn't do a bad job, and whoever laid the tile ( post builder) did a good job considering the walls aren't square.
All in all- not an impossible job- but if you are DIY you better be very handy at tiling and plumbing- those have been the challenge!
