Very interesting article from CNN and perhaps a timely subject this Easter morning.  What's your take?http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2014/04/19/stop-dressing-so-tacky-for-church/?hpt=hp_c2 4951

On the rare occasion I go to church, I make sure the whole family dresses nicely.  4951

@terboggs: Interesting observation.  So you think people are more inclined to dress better in other areas of the country?

As long as your not dressing to send a bad message of some sort I think Jesus Cares less what you wear. 4951

Most churches around here are casual/come as you are attire. Of course, appropriate dress is the rule, but jeans, decent-length shorts and skirts are the norm. Golf attire is common, but mostly jeans and a casual top for both me and women.

Sometimes the teenager girls frequently push the limits on skier and shorts length, but the youth pastor usually addresses that in the youth service.

Our pastors wear jeans.

If people aren't focused on fashion and are comfortable, they will show up. I didn't go for a long time because I hate to dress up and despise hose. 4951

I miss the days when families dressed up for The Lord as opposed to the more casual approach that people take today. Although I do agree that actually GOING to church is what matters more than anything else. We dress up for church though, same as I did with my parents when I was a child. And yes, I was born & raised in Texas. In Houston almost my entire life so it's not like I'm not from around here. (Plus I really just enjoy saying that every chance I get. Emoticon ) I'd never dream of going to church in jeans or a tshirt, but that's just me. 4951

@Heathur: I totally get that, too. it's all preference and just a level of comfort and optional. There are some that still dress up in our church and that's what works for them.

Mixed dress has also entered the work force. Business casual has replaced business attire. In my office, people are more casual than not.

Our society has morphed into more casual so the rules are slowly changing to catch up, perhaps.

@Heathur: That was my experience growing up.  Everyone was expected to wear their Sunday best which typically meant a nice dress for girls/women and a suit for boys/men

I think jeans and a polo is good enough. I think shorts are ok but they have to be nice dress shorts. No basketball shorts or athletic type clothing at all and definatly no tshirts 4951

In the Northeast, we did dress up for mass.  Maybe it is a Catholic thing because the Catholic church is more formal.  I also think in warmer climates people to tend to be more casual. 4951

I think if having a more relaxed dress code means getting more people in the pews to listen to the message, then go for it! The point is that people come to worship God and receive his message. I've been to churches that have a strict, formal dress code as well as churches that are more casual. The quality of the message stayed the same, and to me that's all that matters. I thinks it's just a matter of preference. 4951

Well here's my opinion.  Personally I think people sometimes go overboard with the come as you are sentiment.  I don't think the Bible meant come as you are clothing wise as much as it was trying to convey that you should come as you are in regards to what's in your heart.I can understand why some churches might have a dress standard.  Some people don't have common sense or a sense of decorum.  So they dress the same almost everywhere they go be it a church service or funeral.  The way things are going it wouldn't surprise me to one day see a young lady walk in church wearing booty shorts or the all too popular pajama pants.Like many other things in life the culture or peer pressure sets the standard.  So if a person goes someplace where every one is wearing more formal attire but they're dressed in shorts and a tank top it doesn't take long to get the message. Finally I think having a standard regarding what type of clothes should be worn for various events is good education for young people.  They learn from us what is proper and what is not.  So I think parents, teachers, and other adults that have influence in a young person's life need to set that example. 4951

My dad had a saying "Jesus wore rags and was accepted"  I dont believe in going to church for some stupid fashion show!  Its about your inner soul and your heart being cleansed by God NOT who is wearing what!  This is one of several reasons I quit going to church.  Its all a show.  I can have "church" anywhere I want and I feel right with God. 4951
