>> I know a very very fit guy who did it last year- he slipped in the mud and tore his ACL and both meniscus. It's a rough course and injuries like that do happen
@Jpgurl:
That's kind of what I'm afraid of, but that's also what interests me about it. That totally sucks that happened though. Does he regret participating? I just think it's for a great cause too.
@bp2018: I don't know if he regrets it BUT it delayed his bid for a full Ironman. He got
Injured last summer and only got clearance to start riding his bike again in Jan. I guess it just depends on your goals and does the risk out weigh the benefit for you. Plus you have to understand that any time you have an orthopedic surgery that joint is not going to be just like it was before the injury. There always something a bit off. My dh had both knees scoped last year and he just can't get back to where he was before the surgery- it can be very frustrating.
I know for me personally those type of races aren't worth the risk- an injury could mean I don't ride my bike for a while- and that's not acceptable. BUT I'll be the first to admit I accept that risk of injury every time I ride. I've also known people that do these events and dont get injured.
@Jpgurl:
I'm thinking since my goal is to just finish the race, I should be fine. Like you said, it's all about the risks you choose to take. I want to go sky diving one day, so I guess that's a whole different kind of risk right there! Do you ride your bike fairly often? I used to ride mine a lot as a kid with my dad. After he passed, it just never really felt the same. Hoping to get back into it though.
