I passed by the trucks on Tuesday and have heard several stories already... this is what was released by HPD...A man was killed Tuesday after a hit-and-run on Highway 288 escalated into road rage, Houston police said.Derek Vincent Brown, 42, of Porter, and another man were involved in an accident near the 5000 block of Highway 288 at about 6 a.m. Police said Brown fled the scene and the man, with his 67-year-old father as a passenger, followed him to a parking lot at 2155 North MacGregor Way. As the man attempted to exchange information with Brown, police said both men got into a physical fight with Brown assaulting the man and his father. Brown allegedly pushed the man to the ground and started attacking the man's father.“The son then gets up, tries to defend his father by pulling the driver of the Nissan off his father,” said Jesus Sosa, with HPD Homicide. “He then puts him in a choke hold and starts yelling, 'Call 911.'”As the man tried to subdue Brown, Brown lost consciousness, police said. A witness called 911 and HPD patrol officers and HFD paramedics responded to the scene. Brown was transported to the hospital where he died. The father was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Brown's neighbors in Porter said they are devastated and shocked.“He didn't seem like that type of person to me,” said Ruth Schmidt. “If I needed any help, he was always here to help.” Brown, who leaves behind a wife and two children, spent four days in jail and paid a fine in 2009 after being charged with failing to stop and give information after an accident, according to records. The case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury, which will decide if there will be any charges filed. 4951

So Brown created this mess to begin with? Goodness gracious! It all could have been avoided altogether.Guess he didn't learn the first time. The 2nd time was deadly. Some people never learn. 4951

It just seems to me that people appear more hostile now. Of course our society has never been utopia and there has always been violence. But the simplest things now will set people off to the point of confrontation that sometimes lead to deadly consequences. It would take a social scientist to figure why this is so. But my best guess is we live a more stressed out existence now because we're always "on". We're plugged in into our gadgets 24 hours a day. The downside to that is many of our careers have also damn near become 24/7 commitments, even if it only involves having to answer your bosses emails way past quitting time. So events like car accidents that in the past meant just simply exchanging information can now lead to physical confrontations.Sometimes it's scary to see what the next 10 years or so will bring. 4951
