  Does anybody know if it is ok to give an adult dog heartworm medication while she is breastfeeding new puppies?    We have Heartgard.  I know I can call the vet. I was just curious to know if anybody on here had the answer tonight. 4951

I don't think you can, but honestly I'm not sure. Does it say on your heartworm box? 4951

That's weird. I personally wouldn't chance it. I think it's one of those things where you can, but it's really not recommended. 4951

I did just find this: "Heartgard Plus has shown a wide margin of safety at the recommended dose level in dogs, including pregnant or breeding *****, stud dogs and puppies aged 6 or more weeks. In clinical trials, many commonly used flea collars, dips, shampoos, anthelmintics, antibiotics, vaccines and steroid preparations have been administered with Heartgard Plus in a heartworm disease preventive program." 4951

www.peteducation.com /article.cfm?c=2+210 9&aid=856   This kinds sucks. I'm not sure which way to go now that I've read this. FYI: active ingredient in Heartgard Plus is ivermectin/pyrantel 4951

I know most heartworm medicine goes by weight of the dog. I would be afraid that the puppies would get too large of a dose as an after affect through the breast milk. 4951

 ivermectin/pyrantel  According to the website, ivermectin is safe to use. pyrantel is safe to use if it's not in conjuction with anything else. But in this case it is.   ...perplexed.     LOL 4951

@bp2018:   I had similar concerns but then again, it is diluted.

@bp2018:  Husky  I also found this:http://www.heartgard.com/Pages/hgp_other.aspx
   which clearly claims that they are safe.EDIT:  Upon closer reading, it claims that to be true for Heartgard.  Heartgard Plus is mentioned after that comment.   Hmmmmmmm 4951

@bp2018:   I don't think that waiting way more day will hurt anything.  So yes.  Definitely calling the vet.
