Are there any shops that do free estimates on cars anymore? My daughter is wanting to take her car in to see exactly what is wrong (we think it's a cracked head gasket) and how much to fix it since she is not having much luck looking for a car. Thanks again! Emoticon 4951

@mgw300e: water in the oil (maybe oil in the water? I can't remember what she said!) Overheating, and it does this vibrating thing, she says it feels like a tractor! lol

my husband took my car to kenneth's car repair on northpark and they were  very good and honest.  (and my hubby is a mechanic)  so a good judge of character in this area.  Emoticon 4951

@mrsames77: I'd bet money it's the head gasket.  The only place in the engine where the oil and coolant galleys have any chance of communicating is where the head gasket seals the head to the block.  Oil/coolant mix is a classic head gasket sign.  It's probably vibrating so much because one (or more) of the cylinders has lost compression.

my spouse  and my boys like the small repair place between sonic and the shell station on the corner of corner of north park and LHP.

@RobinZander: That is where we take our vehicles.

@mrsames77: I hate to have to tell you this but it's a $2500 job (or more).  Cheaper than a new car, but not cheap.  The parts are probably less than $200 - it's the labor that kills you on that one.  They have to take the whole top end of the engine off.  They usually do the timing belt and all of the other belts while there in there, too.  It's 1-2 weeks in the shop, depending on how many people they can throw at it.
