Does anyone here know of any dog treats/food that they would recommend that is very healthy? I know what the commercials say, but they all tell you it's the best dog food ever created, but for those of you who actually have dogs, are they any you prefer that you feel is the best? My puppy (okay, not a puppy) is about 13 years old now and she's been eating the same dog food since we first got her, but she's getting up in years, so I was perhaps going to suggest to my family that we switch to something a little healthier for her. Any suggestions? 4951

I really try to stick with treats that are only made in the USA -  It is not easy most of the stuff is made in China and I know there have been lots of problems with the jerky that comes from over seas...  I am also interested in any answers anyone has on this issue...   Also I need Raw hide or someting that a Extreme chewer will not destroy in 2 minutes !!!! 4951

I agree with @Fallon.  I would not switch the dog food especially if she does fine with it.  You could end up with a dog who has gastrointestinal problems.  I tried switching my dog to the more expensive food at the higher end pet stores and had problems with it.  If you do switch, you need to slowly introduce the new dog food mixed with the old dog food for a whole week until you no longer are mixing the old dog food in. 4951

Go talk with Jamie at Pampered Paws.
But first consult with your vet. Is the dog overweight? Blood work might be appropriate to see if all the organs are ok. You may need to watch not only fat but protein. 4951

@lola@nikkioleDitto on Jamie at Pampered Paws.....This chica knows her business when it comes to dog foods - nutrition - brands - different diets - treats etc etc....Also, if you're looking to just give a "treat," try carrots, blueberries, beef jerky (All Natural), cheese, Bully Sticks or RAW bones.....Pampered Paws - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.....3019 Woodland Hills Dr, Kingwood, TX 77339(281) 359-7297 4951

Pampered Paws will also give you samples of different foods to try on your dog before you buy ...so it's nice to see which ones your dog prefers rather than buy something & have your fur friend turn his nose up & refuse to eat it ...been there & done that many times before. 4951

There is a natural pet food store called Natural Pawz in the shopping center where the new Kroger is, off 494. A little pricey, but they have some great healthy stuff there. 4951

Give him any other kind of treat and he is pooping like a goose!

@Fallon: Had a dog like that, so our main treat is milk bones.
I do keep pig ears for those special occasions like getting back from the vet or their coat changed (clipped).but the dried milk bones are the norm.I used to make some healthy ones, they were basically whole wheat flour, ground flax seed, salmon and some binders, cooked until like a soft biscuit, but you had to keep them in the fridge. they liked them, but took up to much fridge space. We had a dog like that, would eat anything, but certain things didn't agree with her.Bones and dairy to name 2 at the top. 4951

@nikkiole: Pampered Paws gave out samples of Primal Raw food and treats.  I mix it with yogurt and peanut butter and put it in there marrow bones.  They go nuts.  I also make sure that their food has no fillers, wheat, dye, etc.  Our boy came to us with very coarse fur.  After a week, it was very soft.  You might also try glucosamine as a supplement.  A friend of mine has an older dog and 2 weeks after that, she was like a pup again.
