In a recent budget workshop held on March 25th Humble ISD board members discussed how to raise teacher pay to remain competitive with neighboring districts but also maintain a balanced budget. The consensus was that starting salary would be increased by 3.5% for teachers with 1-5 years service, 4% for those with 6-10 years. Well, that's nice of them. It's not much but something is better than nothing. Pay seems to vary wildly around here. My husband makes waaaaaay more now in NCISD than he did in Humble.

A friend of his who teaches in Tarkington has a second job delivering pizzas for Domino's because he can't support his family on just his teaching salary. That's just sad. 4951

I'm very surprised at how little teachers are being paid, I feel that jobs starting pay should be nothing less than 45k a year with full benefits!!! Yes, I did say starting at 45k! They are educating our future not to mention setting eary impressionable examples for them as well. 4951

Well, I saw a job opening on this site for a staff accountant requiring a finance or business degree and experience - offering $40K plus benefits. Seems way too low. 4951

@bubbleyes72: They start above that if they are certified.

@jls2: I was about to say that is way low, for a staff postion which means you have been doing accounting at least 10 years if not more, and you are not fresh out of school, the salary should be around 75 to 80k. 4951

I think it required 3 to 5 years experience. My daughter is starting college in the fall pursuing an accounting degree and she better start out way higher than that for her first job! 4951

When you get into Staff and Senior Staff Accounting titles the pay is on the scale of supervisor/manager level, the salary will start at 80k to 100k, if not more (plus experience will factor too). Here where I work if you are a Staff your pay is aligned with a supervisor and if you are a Sr Staff, then your pay is comparable to a manager.

@jls2, The pay will be good, but hopefully she won't mind sitting in an office all day being cooped up. Emoticon 4951

@jls2:   While it sounds low, they will probably see substantial increases their first few years. That's what happened when I first started as an Engineer.  In 1978, I started out at about $17k/year but my pay doubled within about two years. I continued to get substantial raises over the years.  In my last years, I was at top pay for my grade (senior staff) so I only got increases to match inflation.  Of course, over my career, the economy thrived and the demand for Engineers increased, so I was lucky. Now, most new Engineers in the Petro-Chem business start somewhere around $50k-60k and will top $100k within 5-10 years.

Hopefully, she will like it! Of course, what career these days doesn't involve sitting in an office at least part of the day if not the whole day. 4951

@jls2:  I'm not surprised.  My personal info is a bit outdated!

My daughter is teaching her first year in Aldine ISD. She wasn't making full pay because she doesn't get "certified" until May.  She made $44k and certified first year teachers made $46k.  She was happy that next year she would see a $2k increase, but Aldine ISD just announced that starting (1-5 years?) Certified teachers will make $50k next school year.  So, she will see a $6k increase instead of a $2k increase.  Needless to say, she is very happy!  She will finally be able to save some money! My son works in Goose Creek ISD and hasn't heard about any increase next year.  I suspect there will be.  Goose Creek is one of the higher paying districts in the area. 4951
