The one tea I like hot, no less.A cup of Earl Grey tea can lower cholesterol and reduce the chances of heart disease, according to scientists. The beverage, much favoured in Downton Abbey, contains extracts of a fruit called bergamot which scientists believe is a superfood for the heart. And it could even be as effective as statins, the controversial wonder drugs used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in patients. The bergamot is a Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey the distinct taste and smell that has traditionally made it popular with the upper and middle classes. Now new research claims it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can treat heart diseases as effectively as statins. 4951
WOW!I have been drinking this tea regularly. I had very high cholesterol in the past (over 250) and I recently had blood work where I am almost at acceptable levels (just over 200). I haven't changed my diet much but I have been exercising a little more than before.  However, this article makes me wonder what has caused the drop. Maybe a combination of the two. I had not heard about this. The only reason I have been drinking Earl Grey is because my wife has been brewing tea at night (different one) after putting the kids to bed and we spend some time talking over tea. I just prefer EG over the crappy Lipton tea. I have no idea why we have been doing this, I guess it's just the only time of the day we really have to talk. Sometimes we do it over wine, but lately it has been mainly tea. I refuse to take any cholesterol medication, so this is perfect. Now that i know this maybe the placebo effect will help even more! 4951
Interesting... Thanks for posting! Â I recently started drinking black tea (to replace my "loaded-with-sugar" coffee habit)... Â I'll have to grab some Earl Grey next time I'm at the store. 4951
Even thou we think cholesterol is from fat, it is turning out to not be the case.I decreased my carb intake but increased my fat slightly and mine fell to normal levels. 4951
