When melatonin is taken as a dietary supplement, it helps people with sleep disorders get to sleep more quickly, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. However, excess melatonin levels can also lead to trouble sleeping and other health issues. I have never tried melatonin, however have a friend that lives by it. She takes it an hour or so before going to bed - she has recommended it to me. I have this problem on occassion, xusually it's when I'm not getting enough exercise or not eating enough healthy foods. My doctor recommended that if I'm not falling asleep while in bed I should move to a chair and read until drowsy and then return. He explained that if you continue to stay in bed you program your brain that bed is not for sleep. ie..worry  Â
@bap: I have heard that melatonin shouldn't be used by women of child bearing age. Who knows, though. We all hear a lot of things.
