@ a senior center. I was publishing news from one of our sister sites today in California and the author wrote this -"The SCV Senior Center is getting some additional help from the city in providing home-delivered meals. For many recipients, the home-delivered meals they get also provide the bulk of their daily human interaction."It made me recall an experience I had in High School, when I was a senior I worked as a pizza delivery driver. For a few months during the year we had a woman who would call every day and order a large pizza. She was an elderly woman who was bed ridden and never actually ate the pizzas she ordered but wanted the company of the drivers when we arrived at her residence; a single bedroom apartment that was dimly lit. She was very friendly and enthusiastic but was nearing the end of her life and was really unable to do almost anything for herself so she would ask us to do a few things around the apartment for her. Typically I would stay in the apartment for 10-15 minutes talking with her and helping with whatever she needed. Only once during these trips (I visited her residence dozens of times) did I ever see a caretaker there. It was a man in his mid 40s with two young children, all sitting in the living room watching TV while the woman was in the bedroom with the lights off. They seemed to be doing their best to ignore her and it was an extremely depressing scene. Eventually the manager of my store caught on that drivers were spending an inordinate amount of time at her residence and put a stop to the situation but that experience will remain with me for life. It's sad but true that the elderly are often neglected and receive very little human interaction so I wanted to know if any of you were aware of an organization I could volunteer to be able to visit with those that don't have family or friends available for company? 4951

I don't know of any but I couldn't think of a better way of volunteering for something. Let me know what you find, I may consider it too... Can't imagine someone being neglected especially an elderly person. 4951

I use to go to Rosemont in Humble a few times a month. We helped some of the folks to play bingo & once a month did the ladies nails. 4951

Don't judge caretakers harshly.  When my father was sick, he didn't want to do anything but watch TV.  When people came to visit, dad would play cards.  He would talk.  But when it was just us, he didn't want to play cards "I'm sick". 4951

call "meals on wheels" they are in every state & deliver meals to the elderly & talk to them  .Hubby & I are looking into the program they have here for "rocking chair grandparents"  we go to the hospital & rock the babies that are in the nursery long term . It's 2 hour shifts & there is a waiting list  for rockers. You might check & see if the hospitals have any programs you would like to join  for volunteers. 4951

Have you thought of " Meals on Wheels", I believe volunteers deliver the meals, most using the service are elderly.     sorry about that didn't see the post above, worthy cause.  4951

If you belong to a church that's a good place to ask about helping shut ins. I work in home health and I can tell you there are lots of lonely old people in our area who would love a visit or help running errands. 4951

Back up in Ohio there was some program where the local police department would stop by elderly peoples home..my grandma was able to get into that which was nice since we had moved away.abd I could no longer be there for her. I think some nursing homes have adopt a elderly person programs, let me know! 4951

My father passed away in December 2012 and prior to his death, he spent nearly a year in a nursing home down in Houston. He had Alzheimer's and was in a locked unit. I visited him three times a week and it was sad to see, and I heard from the aides, that some of the residents never had any visitors. I used to donate magazines, puzzles, bedding, whatever I saw a need for in the nursing home. If my dad was sleeping, I would spend time with some of the residents who did not have any family or friends. @Drekonix That is admirable that you want to volunteer to work with the elderly. Some day when I have more time, that is what I intend to do. 4951
