In major league baseball there's a new job this year called the Field Timing Coordinator.  The person times the commercial breaks and replay breaks to ensure the players are on the field and ready to play, and the broadcasts return from commercial in the proper time frame. The schedule was set, but someone needed to swap a game with me.  He asked if we could swap STC assignments."STC?"  I asked."Stadium Timing Coordinator - that's the NBA position name."  (He also works for the NBA."  "I mixed up my TLA's (three letter acronyms."My response: "OIC". 4951

I have two jobs with Major League Baseball.  One is as a stats "stringer", which is a scorekeeper.  I attend games and score every play on both paper and in a software client.  This feeds MLB's Gameday application, which lets people follow a game on the computer.  This also feeds all the play data to the various official stats databases.  I also help the official scorer, and monitor/assist the scoreboard and broadcasts in case of errors with counts or other aspects of scoring. The second job is a Field Timing Coordinator.  Last season, league wide, games were late returning from specified commercial breaks about 10% of the time.  The FTC times breaks and signals break starts and ends.  The FTC also keeps time for replay breaks and makes sure announcements of replay decisions take place when the broadcasts are back from commercial breaks. The first job requires hours of training including learning play codes and scoring games from video.  There is always a backup person scoring the game remotely and a supervisor monitoring a number of games to help when the plays are complicated.  The second job requires keeping time on a stop watch.  The second job pays 50% more. The scorekeeping job will get easier next year because of a computer tracking system for all balls in play.  The system will track the ball path and every fielder who touches the ball.  This will remove the need for all the codes. Here is a sample of a code for a play:Runners are on 1st and 3rd.  Mark Teixeira hits a ground ball to pitcher Matt Moore who throws to third baseman Evan Longoria getting Ellsbury into rundown. Ellsbury scores throwing error by catcher Ryan Hangian, as the ball travels down the left field line (assists to pitcher and third baseman respectively). Derek Jeter out at home (72) attempting to score on the error. Teixeira out at 2nd attempting to advance on the throw home (24).FC1/G/DP.3-H(15E2/TH)(NR)(UR);1XH(72);BX2(24/TH)NR means no RBI is awarded.  UR means it's an unearned run.  G/DP means a ground ball double play with one or both outs on unforced runners.  FC1 means a fielder's choice for the pitcher - he made a decision to try to get an out on an unforced runner.  4951

Acronyms are a handy way to improve/shorten communications IF (and only IF) their full meaning is commonly understood by the people being communicated with.My company (major oil company) loved acronyms.  We just made it standard practice that the first time they were used in any document, the full name had to be given.ie    During the RCA (Root Cause Analysis) investigation.....People usually named their own teams or groups.  I loved the Solids Handling Improvement Team.  They even had decals made for their hardhats. 4951

FC1/G/DP.3-H(15E2/TH)(NR)(UR);1XH(72);BX2(24/TH)Ground ball fielded by the pitcher.  He threw to try to retire an unforced player (there was nobody on 2nd base.)  There were two outs, but they weren't both force outs resulting from the ball in play.  Pitcher threw to 3rd baseman threw to catcher who made a wild throw.  The runner from third scored. There was no RBI, and the run was unearned because of the error. The runner from 1st base tried to score.  He was thrown out by the left fielder throwing to the catcher at home base.  The batter was out trying to advance to 2nd base.  He was thrown out by the catcher throwing to the 2nd baseman. 4951
