Have you actually seen lightning strike something?  Has lightning ever hit close to you?I've seen lightning strike three times.  Two hit electrical transformers.  One was about two hundred yards away (I was in a restaurant), but the other was only about fifty feet away (I was in a car).  The transformers blew up in a shower of sparks and then burned.  The other lightning strike I saw was a pine tree just off of a highway (I was in a car).  The lightning hit near the top of the tree and the tree exploded about half way down.  As for close proximity, back in LaPlace, we had lightning hit a small cable TV box at the back corner of our yard.  It fried every TV near us as well as most of the cable.  Then about 10 years ago, lightning struck a huge pine tree about 15 feet from our bedroom. The tree died but no other collateral damage.  Both times, we were asleep when it struck.  We woke up to a brilliant flash of light and a loud rumble.  It wasn't as loud as I thought it would be. 4951

i was watching the storm from the french doors in our house when lightning struck a huge oak tree about 30 feet outside the door, right where I was looking.Scared the crap out of me, blinded me, and shook everything like crazy. The tree had a spiral strip down it part of the trunk and a straight strip in the bark from the half way point to the ground. The tree seemed fine that year after that spring storm, but the next spring it was dead and we had to have it cut down. 4951

I've seen it strike trees and transformers.  I was once struck, but other than a flash and falling to the ground, I didn't feel much.I also once saw a tornado descend and rip a neighbor's tree from the ground. 4951

@FoFa:  Our huge pine tree didn't die right away either.  It also had a strip of bark missing down part of the main trunk.  It took several months to die and apparently pine bark beetles is what did it in.  The guy that cut it down said that the lightning weakened it and the pine bark beetles finished it off.@notfromhere:  Lighting farts does NOT count unless you lit them with lightning! 4951

My FIL is terrified of all natural "disasters".   During a thunderstorm, he won't touch any plumbing fixtures, electrical device, or phone (even his cell phone).  He moved to a part of Arkansas that is prone to tornadoes, but didn't build a storm shelter (we were shocked!).  During a hurricane or tsunami, he stays glued to the TV reports even though he is no where near them.  He's never explained why he's so terrified of them (or maybe even he doesn't know why?). 4951

@Retired Engineer My father was was waiting for his triple bypass surgery at home when lightning hit their house and struck their our alarm system.  We were afraid that he was going to have a heartache.  We were trying to get him to the basement and he was having angina pain.  The lightning bolt then went from my parents house to the neighbors and made a hole in their basement wall.  Another time that neighbor was talking on the phone and got knocked off his chair.  My parents are petrified whenever there is lightning. 4951
