I hate the new math.  I feel like I'm definetly not smarter than a 3rd grader when my DD brings it home.

I have her do it the way I know, then the way they want her to.  They have to show the work on everything.

I was told it prepares them for Algebra.  Guess that's why I don't understand it.  I got a D in high school. 4951

As an engineer I can tell you that this prepares kids for algrebra as much eating brocolli prepares you for a career in airplane design.  4951

Complicate the crap out of addition and subtraction seems to be the common denominator...I wonder if kids nowadays know what common denominator is! 4951

Using a number line helps students, when they're having trouble adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers.I give students the rules, but some can't seem to grasp it from those.Positive + Positive = Positive: 5 + 4 = 9 Negative + Negative = Negative: (- 7) + (- 2) = - 9 Sum of a negative and a positive number:
Use the sign of the larger number and subtract(- 7) + 4 = -36 + (-9) = - 3 (- 3) + 7 = 45 + ( -3) = 2
Subtracting Rules:Negative - Positive = Negative: (- 5) - 3 = -5 + (-3) = -8Positive - Negative = Positive + Positive = Positive: 5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8 Negative - Negative = Negative + Positive = Use the sign of the larger number and subtract (Change double negatives to a positive)(-5) - (-3) = ( -5) + 3 = -2(-3) - ( -5) = (-3) + 5 = 2 4951

@fcabanski: I may not agree with you on a lot of things but you seem to be a great Math teacher!

"They can do these problems in seconds.  They understand the reason the answer is what it is, and they get the concept."I think it was three years ago one of my tutoring students was having trouble with a strange division method his school was teaching.  I searched it to try to figure out how it worked.  The professor who created it said it was far superior to traditional division.  He called traditional division "a shortcut".The boy's mom asked me to attend a meeting with various teachers and administrators to discuss the boy's problems in math.  I told them the same thing I told the boy.  "Forget this professor's ridiculous method.  Do math." The boy no longer had problems with division. These whacky methods are often like abbreviations that are longer than the whole word or abbreviations that people have to explain.  If the new method doesn't save time, and if it doesn't make it easier, then there's no point in using it.It's like KTRH with their ridiculous minutes.  "This is the MPM - Matt Patrick Minute."   If you have to say the whole thing to explain what the abbreviation means, then the abbreviation hasn't saved any time 4951

Most students struggling with math don't know their multiplication tables.  It's the first thing I check with students. The other main problem students have is critical thinking.  They don't practice solving problems by thinking.  To learn math and critical thinking you have to run into a wall, go back to the beginning, struggle through a problem to solve it.ISME - Especially when someone has no idea what to do with a problem.Identify the problem type.  Usually this leads to better understanding and solving the problem.Set Up - This mostly means writing down the info given in the problem (drawing a diagram and labeling if possible, and writing down what is known about that type of problem.  For example, if it's about triangles, then what is known is the rule of 180, the sum of any two interior angles is greater than the third angle, 1/2 * b* h for area, pythagoras for right triangles, etc. Also, if a student writes, he can look back later to correct mistakes.  If the student does all the work in his head, then he'll have to rethink it if he wants to review the problem.Make Sure - Make sure it's known what the problem is asking, and that all the info written is correct.Execute - solve the problem.  Last night I was working a sample problem for finding the area of a region rotated around a line.  When I read the thing I had no idea what region they could mean.  The two given functions didn't have any space between them.  How could there be a region bounded by the functions?  But after graphing three points for each given equation, it was clear and easy. 4951

@fcabanski: I am lost.  When my DD gets to Algebra and Calculus I'm calling you to tutor me. 4951

I have one currently taking Geometry with a 75 to 25 scale.  She is carrying a 79.  Bombing on the tests portions because she is waiting to study until the next day.  I tell her you have to keep going over it.  And going over it as soon as you can that way you retain most of what is taught.  Waiting a couple of days, then crash studying is not the way to go.But I am just Mom, so what do I know.Loading Image... 4951
