I'm sure most of you by now have heard of the sad case of a firefighter being accidently shot by a neighbor.  He was apparently so intoxicated he attempted to enter her house instead of his own.  My question is why do some people purposely get that drunk?  I have heard folks say "yeah I'm going to get plastered tonight".I'm in no way demonizing alcohol.  But can someone please explain the attraction to not having complete control of your senses? 4951

I don't get it but I do respect that he did not get in a car and drive but hired a cab.   Such a bad situation all around... 4951

Not long after I started working, I went out with a bunch of friends and we were all drinking pretty heavy.  The next day, they were telling me things that I did, but I had no memory of them.  I didn't like that feeling.   After that, I would drink until I felt good, but would then slow down on my drinking. Now I only have a drink/beer every once in a while. 4951

i dislike getting drunk....i hate the feeling it gives me. actually i dislike drinking period. its annoying and it makes me feel like crap so why do it..and i went through the phase where i wanted to get wasted for a brief part of my life...honestly i cant tell you why. i was either bored, unhappy or just wanted to get "wasted" so i wouldnt feel anything. which is so stupid cause people end up feeling more and crying, or calling people they shouldn't, or killing people, or just doing stupid crap like this man did right here. NOW i know i hate drinking and how it makes me feel. glad i have realized it haha. 4951

My room-mate in college was guaranteed to puke after 4 or more drinks.  He could spread them out, but it didn't matter.  After he puked in my car (mostly the outside but a little on the inside), the next morning I handed him a bucket and a wash cloth and he had to clean it up.  He puked while cleaning up his previous puke. 4951

I am a cheap drunk..zero tolerance. If I have wine with dinner I will get drunk just having something to wash the food down.

I have a 2-3 drink limit and have learned to stop when I am feeling good. Many years ago we went to a wedding in Michigan and I had way too many rum and cokes. Felt okay that night but paid for it the next day. It was humiliating to fly home holding a barf bag the whole time. Didn't even feel good enough to brush my hair or wash my face! Never again! 4951

It was fun in college, but I can't stand to not be in control of myself, so I don't drink much any more.

That story is very sad, but he is responsible for his own death. I imagine he may have either not heard the warnings, or thought he was dreaming. Sucks that one night of drinking ended his life. 4951

He probably has an addiction issue.

There are different kind of drunks too. Not all of them get soused every day. But most of them drink too much when they do drink. Nothing worse than an obnoxious drunk either.

It's a shame bc in moderation,alcohol is a pleasure. I can't drink much but there a few drinks I really enjoy now, and I didn't ever drink when I was in my 20's when lots of people live it up, but one or two is perfect now and I need to eat with it or not be on an empty stomach. Getting drunk just isn't fun, and lots of people use it as an excuse to be stupid or do stupid things. 4951

People do stupid things.  If you have a friend or family member who does this, help them stop. 4951

@fcabanski:

That's easier said than done. Been there, tried to do that and all I got was frustrated and worn out and disappointed.

They HAVE to want it too, and that's just the first step in a long battle that they have to believe is worth fighting for. For them, it seems impossible. It's like falling in love, you don't just wake up and stop loving someone one day. They don't wake up and want to be sober. They want a drink.
