Health industry officials say ObamaCare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration. The expected rate hikes will be announced in the coming months amid an intense election year, when control of the Senate is up for grabs. The sticker shock would likely bolster the GOP’s prospects in November and hamper ObamaCare insurance enrollment efforts in 2015.“The increases are far less significant than what they were prior to the Affordable Care Act,” the secretary said in testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee. Her comment baffled insurance officials, who said it runs counter to the industry’s consensus about next year. “It’s pretty shortsighted because I think everybody knows that the way the exchange has rolled out … is going to lead to higher costs,” said one senior insurance executive who requested anonymity. The insurance official, who hails from a populous swing state, said his company expects to triple its rates next year on the ObamaCare exchange. The hikes are expected to vary substantially by region, state and carrier.  4951

It wouldn't surprise me. I buy private policies right now for myself and my child. We have one due in August and I'll have to buy private for that kid as well. Employer insurance was already unaffordable and I'm afraid of what the rate hikes will be next year. My husband gets his insurance for free but to add us, it's completely out of the question financially.

And I did check the marketplace before I purchased myself a policy this past January. Prices were similar to private, but luckily I'm insurance-literate and understood that the coverage was non-existent with massive deductibles and coinsurance. It's one massive scam, and I truly pity those who did not or could not understand the fine print before signing up for Obamacare. 4951

@bubbleyes72: I agree with you.  Nothing good can come of this discussion.  Way too polarizing.

So the latest is "let's not discuss it, because people disagree."  Let's just pass these things, because people will disagree. 4951

Below is some info from a health ins organization that keeps up with it. We've had several meetings with Carriers and have heard the same thing, they do not know yet, and will probably wait till the last minute/second as they do not know yet, but they are sure there will be drastic rates increases across the board. Everybody likes to "add to it" to make it sound better/worse as we all know this is BS............“The increases are far less significant than what they were prior to the Affordable Care Act,” the secretary said in testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee"But then, on the other side, this is BS too (maybe triple the rate increases, like you received 25% last yr, could be 75% next renewal, but to triple rates, can't happen)........."said his company expects to triple its rates next year on the ObamaCare exchange"Health insurers participating in public exchanges are just a month or two away from having to submit prices for their 2015 Obamacare plans. However, key facts required to make those decisions are still missing: final 2014 enrollment figures, the age and health of new policyholders, and which doctor and hospital networks the federal government will approve. That information won’t be available until after the state and federal deadlines, which start as early as April in some areas. The lack of information has left many carriers undecided on which plans they will offer in which areas, and for how much.“Are [rate increases] going to be double-digit, and are we going to get beat up because of the double digit, or are we going to just have to pull out of the program? Those questions can’t be answered until we see the population we have today,” said Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini during a CNBC interview. The confusion also trickles down to producers, who by and large expect 2015 rates to escalate.“We’ve been told the rates are going to be two years behind every year. Carriers won’t be able to accurately rate for this risk until 2016,” said Scott Leavitt, an Idaho insurance agency owner and former president of the National Association of Health Underwriters. “It’s going to make rates go through the roof.”Leavitt also expressed fears that “some of the more responsible healthcare companies” will either sell out or go out of business. For Tim Jost, a health law expert with Washington and Lee University, the possibility of “some sort of shakeout” is indeed quite real—particularly for small and regional insurers that attracted only a few customers during this year’s open enrollment period. Teresa Gutierrez, a producer in North Carolina, said the potential fallout may even be felt in the small business market.“If we end up with the perfect storm of bad consequences, then it will definitely create a situation where rates are going to be significantly higher for everything. It would probably even impact small group clients, including small businesses,” Gutierrez noted. “Insurance carriers are in essence losing cash, and in some states, individual markets are tied with small group markets. They’re all part of a common pool.”However, this year’s uncertainty doesn’t necessarily spell doom for Obamacare and its participating carriers and producers.“[The national insurers] have been watching the markets, and if 2014 turns out to look better than expected, they may jump in,” Jost told Reuters. 4951

@Guzla: I hate OC as much, if not way more than you, but your statement is ONE of the many issues leading up to this health crisis we are in. No, you don't spend that in a year, health ins. isn't supposed to cover you for Dr's appt., shots, medicines for a cold, ect, so you're even every year on what you spent for health care vs ins premium. It's for when you break a leg, or have a heart attack, or need you appendix out, things that you can't afford, and HOPE do not happen to you, and if they don't, it's paying for somebody else in your group to have the above done.

How This Anti-Obamacare Ad Misses The Bigger Health Care Picture

@ProblemAgain: I 100% agree with you on that, who's the idiot that came up with that situation for an Anti-OC ad, I think any body out there knows a lady paying $52 for HC didn't have a true ins. policy, and if anything, that situation is one of the very few things OC does that's beneficial, requiring this lady, who, unless she's a very unsuccessful acc't (and if she was, her premium would be a lot less than that, in most situations), can afford health ins and requires her to chip her part in and pay for HC.They could use (I actually have a hard time believing that's a real Anti-OC ad, and not made up) the hundreds of thousands, or millions, of middle class families that had a true health care policy, that do not have one now or are paying a lot more for less coverage due to Obamacare.

@cador: if you notice, she went from essentially a type of semi-medicaid funded by the state to a platinum plan and complains about the cost...yet she would have been unable to get a policy because of the lupus or the policy would have excluded lupus and any and all other medical issues that could be attributed to lupus....
