We've been considering going to Gold's Gym but I was wanting some real reviews first. What do you think of Gold's? Are they affordable? Do they offer child care? If so, what's the child care like? (It's for a 7 year old.) Any special classes or equipment I should know about? Do they have a pool? Thanks in advance. Emoticon 4951

@Heathur gold's =no pool and poor customer service (Kingwood). The YMCA has a pool, more classes(I think) and a nice weight room. My vote is for the Y. Besides, I'm joining and @mpjp0907 is a member. We can be workout budsEmoticon Maybe I'd actually go. 4951

I love golds never had any issues at all there. LOVE the classes and instructors. And it's close to home for me. 4951

@Heathur: Free Childcare while you workout.   It 92.00 a month for 2 adults with kids.  I can't stand Gold's Gym.  No one I have met likes them.

@Heathur: Idk. Stop in and get a tour. It's family friendly. When the boys and I were younger, we would shoot hoops during open gym. For Gold's we paid 150 each (not per family cause they only do individual contracts) and pay 20 a month. They charge extra every may for an "equipment fee". I think it's like 30 bucks each. I would take tours of all the gyms and then pick the one you like the bestEmoticon

If you're looking for a family place, Golds is not your answer. Golds is for people who want to workout.

If you want to swim, play hoops, kick a ball around...join the YMCA.

I love Golds Gym. I go there for 1 reason and 1 reason only...to workout. I don't need options, though. Otherwise, I'd join that place down in Atascocita.

I got out of my golds contract very easily.  Golds is much more affordable then the Y.  I wish I could afford the Y.  Just depends on what you are looking for both have childcare.  I would say visit both and get a feel for what is a better fit for you. 4951

I teach Cycle at Gold's. The Pro's are- we have one of the best team of group exercise instructors in the city. We have multiple instructors who each have over 20 years of teaching under our belts and multiple certifications. We offer all the Les Mills programs, Zumba and freestyle classes. So if you want classes that is the place to be. There is a lot of equipment( cardio and weight lifting machines) and free weights. It is a no frill gym which may be a pro or con depending on what you are looking for. The membership is inexpensive when compared to local gyms. The cons are no pool and while we do have a cleaning staff I have heard people say they think it's dirty. I don't find it dirty- I think the dark floor may give that impression.
Having said that- I will say we also belong to the Y. We joined so that dh can "run" in the pool and they have new bikes in the cycling studio that estimate wattage output. That's an important training technique for us and we don't have bike computers on our bike in the cycling studio at Golds. The Pros at the Y are it is very very bright and clean. They have a lot of the Les Mills programs but not all. The bikes are a huge plus for me- the main reason I joined. They have a top notch personal training staff- probably the best in this area. It's very family oriented with programs for both adults and kids. The Cons would be the price( you're helping to pay for programs - I used to work for a Y) and if you don't have kids then you might be bothered by kids running around. I will say this Y is laid out so that there is no reason for kids to be back by the cardio/ weight room and the rooms where the adult classes are held so you won't really see kids running amok. I find the weight lifting area small and lacking. I have to wait more for machines and weights. Not a biggie- I just do my lifting at Golds. The group exercise instructors are ok- they're popular- I maybe more critical because I am an instructor. I find that some of them aren't as knowledgeable in the technical stuff as they should be but they are very personable and have a huge following.
I'd go to all the gyms, figure out what's important to you and go from there 4951

@jax:
And that's great, but I need a daycare spot for my kiddo to hang at while I workout. Even 24 hour fitness offered that. 4951
