My 6 yr old daughter will NOT stopping chewing/sucking on her hair. It's driving me insane!! Her hair is down to her butt and were in the process of growing out her bangs so they're only grown out to the bottom of her nose. I put it back in a ponytail and pin her bangs back and spray with hairspray but they still fall down and she pulls her ponytail around and chews on it. Her hair is constantly wet and it gets knots in it from chewing on it. Cutting her hair is not an option cause her daddy won't let her and she loves her long hair. Please tell me someone has advice on what to do. Is there something I can spray in her hair to make it taste bad or something? HELP!! 4951

Why won't her dad let her cut it? She's at the age where you can tell her it's going to be cut if she doesn't stop. But unless you'll actually do it, she'll call your bluff.

It's most likely a comforting thing for her. A way to reduce anxiety. Like some people bite their nails, twirl their hair, suck their thumb. It's going to be hard to break if she can still get it in her mouth. 4951

He likes her hair long and so does she. I wouldn't mind cutting it but I wouldn't want to cut it as short as it would need to be to keep out of her mouth.i just feel like a broken record "get your hair out of your mouth" every 30 mins. I read online that it can actually cause medical problems where the hair can build up in her stomach like a cat with hairballs and can actually need surgery if too much hair builds up. I just don't know if she's old enough to tell her it could make her have to have surgery. I don't want to scare her I just want her to stop 4951

I bet she is not swallowing the hair.  My friend's daughter did that and it drove me nuts and I am not her mother.  How about you will reward her with little things each day she stops!  Tell her you will treat her after a week of stop chewing she gets a manicure or something. 4951

Its an equivalent of biting nails. The more anxiety the more she will do it. We had this issue with my daughter and pulling her eye brow hair out and had to research what to do. You can start by redirecting her to another anxiety outlet like a stress ball. Doesnt matter if she is 2 or 20 she cant stop it without a redirect and time to break the habit. The more you yell at her for it the more she will do it also. Threatening her punishment over it is like telling a dyslexic child you are going to take his toys away if he doesn't learn to read right now. It must be a total positive reward system and redirect situation or it will only get worse.Even when the habit is broke you will have to watch close for a relapse.  We are growing our third set of eyebrows back on my 9 year old....roflmao....we are in an upswing right now as she has not pulled any hair out of them in almost a year but when she was sick few weeks back I noticed her tugging some and I broke her stress balls back out...:-) 4951

@calliecat: This is an excellent idea but dont go a week yet...start smaller, like a sticker chart and for every 30 minutes or an hour she leaves her hair along she gets a sticker and if she has atleast 5 stickers at the end of the day she gets a reward..a buck, candy, trip to dollar store....etc. But make sure if she puts any effort forward possible she gets something and dont punish for not getting more stickers. No punishment.....let me repeat....NO PUNISHMENT....LOL

I agree with Burnsway it is a nervous habit.  Just like the constant twisting of the hair is a sign of anxiety.  She will grow out of doing it.  Is she shy around other kids? 4951

you might want to talk to either her DR about  this or her school counselor.  They can usually get  answers you can't from your daughter.  As much as we want to think our kids are open with us they do keep somethings to themselves.  I wouldn't worry it could be something as silly as worried about a test or if a little boy likes her... Is she advanced or gifted in any areas. Gifted children tend to be more at risk for high anxiety and little quirks like this.Anxiety doesnt always show in forms of what we think anxiety looks like. It has many hidden signs, especially in children. 4951

@Burnsway:

We think she's advanced but her school doesn't do testing until the end of the school year 4951

My daughter did the hair thing for years when she was little!  It was awful.  We tried everything to get her to stop and eventually she did stop on her own.  It becomes a habit they can't stop.  Try braiding her hair that way she can't pull small clumps into her mouth.My princess also chewed her nails, so she had the hair chewing and the nail biting going on at the same time.  She did stop the hair habit, but her nails are almost nonexistent.  4951

@Puzzles:
Ive tried the braid thing too but its still long enough that she chews on the ends. I've thought about putting her hair in a bun but I'm not very good at putting the bobby pins in where they won't fall out

@squirtismyboy: Because they cant control it and given her age this would make it worst. Now not only is she anxious over whatever causes her to do this she gets to sit up freaking out more about that being in her tummy. A 6 year old wont rationalize it properly and will probably stop eating real food in hopes it will leave more room because that she can control.I do think however an older teen or adult may take note and try to stop knowing the damage. Think about people who have seen what a lung looks like when they smoke(myself included off and on my whole life) and they still smoke. If an adult cant control themselves knowing what its doing to them a 6 yr old will just plain freak out....LOL
