From the Houston Chronicle -  www.chron.com/news/h ouston-texas/texas/a rticle/National-inve ntory-of-hate-g upon some of the vitriol I've heard around these parts, especially since the election of Obama I'm not a bit surprised. As a native Texan I know the vast majority doesn't think this way. But for the minority that do they make the loudest noise on the airwaves and the Internet. Hopefully as time passes their ilk will pass right along with it.        4951

I'm my own hate group. They didn't add mine to the list, I'm sure.

Probably a Good thing too. Obama and the IRS would start targeting me.

Goes to show that hatred is still very much alive here in the country, especially in the South. Some people would like to believe it doesn't exist anymore, but prejudice is still as relevant in this country today as it was 60 years ago.  4951

Um, yeah. Was saying that supposed to negate my point or something? Or to imply that it's no big deal because it's something we will always have?I don't think so. 4951

My point being, some people live in a fantasy world where they believe prejudice has been eradicated in America, and those who believe otherwise are living in the past. That is wrong. 4951

Hatred will always be alive. Trying to fix it is all well and good, but a huge waste of time.

I don't believe, for instance Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's efforts were a "waste of time." I don't believe Christ's efforts were a "waste of time." Or Ghandi's. And thousands of other people who took up the mantle of battling hatred and prejudice. And I think it's because of men and women like them, the world has been helped along to move towards a more suitable place to live, where people aren't treated a socially acceptable way because of race, gender, religion, etc.  4951

2000+ years later, Christians are still being peesecuted for their belief in Jesus.

Years have passed since MLK's dream and we still have race problems.

Hatred won't end. It's a waste of time to even try. The efforts may be noble, right and publicized, but won't change much.

Sucks, I know, but that's the fact jack.

So you think nothing has improved from the 1950s compared to now?You seem to be under the assumption that something is only worth fighting if it can be completely eradicated. But trying to make things better is a great fight too. And you know what, I'm happy. Don't you think I am living better now than I would have been 70 years ago? Do people still hate me? Yes. But I think my life is much better because of their efforts. 4951

My point being, some people live in a fantasy world where they believe prejudice has been eradicated in America, and those who believe otherwise are living in the past.

That is wrong.

@nikkiole: Prejudice is very wrong, but many times the prejudice is just perceived.  Some people live to feel hate from everyone they encounter and they immediately jump to the conclusion that it is prejudice towards them or their culture or their race or their looks or.....it is PERCEIVED BY THE INDIVIDUAL. These people love to be the victim of prejudice even when there is none.  Yes, there will always be hate - it's been around since the beginning of time.  Nothing will remove the hate from some people's hearts - but it is up to me to overlook that hate and keep on with my life.  If I let others hate (aka prejudice) affect me then I'm just their puppet.  It is their problem if they have a hardened heart. As for your comment about fantasy world where they believe prejudice has been eradicated in America, and those who believe otherwise are living in the past.

Couldn't the same be said about those who continually hold on to the past of their ancestors, claiming they are suffering because their ancestors suffered?  That's a bunch of malarkey.  Too many blacks (and Irish and Polish and Japanese and Hispanics etc) have had ancestors who also suffered and they do not constantly live that past, that they, themselves, had no part of.  You make yourself what you want it to be.  If you want to be the perpetual victim, then that's exactly what you will be. If you look for hate from others, then naturally, you will find it.  You will tear other's words apart until you find where you feel they have made a direct insult to you....therefore they hate you and they are a racist.  Doesn't matter that is not what their words intended, but you found it, therefore it is REAL...only because you want it to be. 4951

@TexasOmaHatred and prejudice does effect you. Sometimes it's not a matter of whether or not to allow it to effect you. Sometimes, it can't be helped. As far as living in the past, I can only speak confidently from an African American standpoint: Some people are still living in the past. However, some people have become so adverse to talking about race, prejudice, other issues, that every time it is mentioned, they is a general covering of the ears. For instance, I hate the term "the race card." It's used EVERY TIME race is brought up. Sometimes someone is just playing the victim, but sometimes, the prejudice is very real. However, some people think that any mention of it is someone trying to play the victim. And that's is wrong. It's hard to accuse someone of living in the past, when their past still effects them. And it does. It's not so black and white. It's not "either you rise above it and don't let it bother you, or you're playing a victim." Sometimes no matter how hard you try to ignore it, not let it bother you, prejudice still can effect your life in the most negative of ways, because people perpetuate prejudice and unless you don't take a step outside your house, you will always interact with people. 4951

It affects you because you let it. Do you think poor people - no matter the color - enjoy being put down, equated to rednecks, white trash (other color trash), trailer trash...etc?  When you see someone driving around in a junk car, living in low class conditions, living homeless or in a homeless shelter, living in the projects, any of the things that indicate poor....what is your first impression?  Can you relate to them?  Do you befriend them?  Do you shun them...walk to the other side of the sidewalk?  So, what is the difference from what you are claiming is only a BLACK problem?  I grew up in the projects...should I live day to day about my poorness?  About how we were shunned because we didn't have proper shoes, clothes, food. We didn't go places others got to go, we had to ride the bus or walk?   Believe me, as an extremely poor person, we suffered prejudice, hate.  It was painful at the time.  But, as I grew up, I realized that it was MY PROBLEM, not theirs. I learned that I cannot control what others think or do, I can only control what I do, how I perceive what others say or think or act.  I changed my attitude about life and about others.  I stopped living the victim mentality and moved on to the "to hell with it mentality" and I am no longer affected by my past.  I am no longer concerned about having lived in the projects - in fact, I now view it as "it made me who I am today".  If I had not had the experiences I had as a child I would not be the compassionate nurse that I am today. Each person takes away from their experiences then things that make them grow or stagnate.  You like to dwell on the racial issues, it will make you only see things from a racial POV. Start looking at people from a person to person POV and pull from each encounter things that make you grow. 4951
