I wanted to try my new rifle and went to Thunder Gun Range in Porter. I went there and the range looks very outdated and the staff is practically none and the owner was just plain weird. I had to wait 20 minutes for ceasefire so I could hang my target along with five other people. to make a long story short this is another business to avoid. I will stick with Hot wells range in 290 as the range and staff are 100% better. Who else here had a bad experience in thunder Gun Range? 4951

I have never shot a gun much less held one.  I have gone by that place and always thought it looked run down. 4951

I've never had any issues with the owner, the RO's, nor their safety rules. But if you wish to run down to the 100yd mark and hang your target while the range is HOT...you go right ahead.  4951

We love Thunder.  Never had a problem other than the old guy getting after my son for rapid fire...oops!!Don't think it's practical that there would be a cease fire every time a new person came in to shoot.  You probably got there right after the previous cease fire had ended. 4951

@bluewave: I understand how the ceasefire process works but I find it hard you have six people waiting while two shooters are the only ones shooting. My other issue was how the owner yelled at his female employee like she was trash. The old guy you were talking about was somewhere in a corner smoking so I only saw him two times.

They don't have a problem with kids shooting as long as there is an adult. We have always gone to Carters Country not knowing there was any place closer. Might have to check them out D's got a new gun for his bday. 4951

@mommyof5: If you're interested, they actually have an NRA Youth Program at Thunder that meets one Sunday per month from 1-3pm.  Pistol is the first Sunday of the month and rifle is the last.  They were talking about starting a shotgun in between but I'm not sure if they ever did since DS only shoots rifle and pistol.

I've never been to Thunder but had been thinking about it. The non rapid fire thing is annoying. Carter Country is where I usually go and they are the same way.I enjoy firing 3 round bursts, or just putting as much lead down range as possible period with my AR and seeing how tightly grouped I can get it. Real life isn't going to be a take your time and make it in one shot deal.Spring Guns & Ammo is a nicer indoor range, and they do not have silly rules against emptying a magazine as fast as possible. They are only ~25yrds though, which isn't much sport with a long rifle. They do rent full auto's of various types though. There is also D Gun Range on 59 south of 1960, but they won't allow me to fire the AR there. Backstop is insufficient to stop a 5.56x45. 4951

My hubb uses the In-Door Range at Sportsman Outlet (off of 1960 in Humble) when he needs to let off a few rounds with one of his pistols........And then there's always good ole Carter's Country.........I can remember going there with my pops as a kid..........Both places always have good peeps working and offer good old fashion customer service...........And that's why they get our business..... 4951

There is a relatively new outdoor range in Dayton.  It's the Dayton Gun Club & Range at 3034 CR 615.  Their phone is 936-258-9803.  Their Facebook site ishttps://www.facebook.com/DaytonGunRangeTheir ad says:From FM 1960 take CR 615.  Stay on CR 615 for 2.8 miles.  Turn right at our driveway marked with a sign that reads 3034 CR 615.  Follow the road for 1/2 mile. The range is located on the left side.  I haven't been there, but have wanted to go. 4951
