Hey everyone, I live in an apartment in the humble area. I was going with center point energy but my contract expires this month (they billed me an outrageous amount too). I'm looking for a new provider for a month to month plan because I'm only planning on staying in my current apartment for 4 more months. Need recomendations for the lowest rates and most hassle free provider. Thanks! 4951

For only 4 more months, I would just re-up with Centerpoint on a month to month basis.  Not worth the hassle.  Lot of really cheap plans on "power to choose" but you need to use 1000 KWH/mo. If you do I see 5-7 cent plans out there.  4951

I'm happy with Spark. And I agree that calling is better than accepting the online rates. 4951

Well I have a question and I'm glad this thread was started. I have a centerpoint bill and a Gexa bill. My centerpoint bill  103.00  Gexa was 197.00  But looking at my bill i see that there is a centerpoint charge of 57 bucks. WTH? I'm floored at how confusing all this energy and gas stuff is here. I'm used to having one company for gas and one company for Electric. I find it funny that when I found gexa, never was it mentioned that I was under a contract for a year. In fact I didn't even know you did have contracts. Apparently people shop around alot and move services from one company to another. I don't have the kind of time to surf the web for the best rates every quarter. Jeesh, this is a PITA! And is my Gexa Bill high for a 3100 sq ft house? I know it's been cold. I'm curious what most of you good people here average during the spring, summer and fall both gas and electric? Thanks in advance. 4951

Holy cow @drekonix that is insane. We were in an apartment before buying this house in Late August. Top floor afternoon sun and the utilities were close to or over 300.00 most of the summer. CRAZY. you should complain to the apartment complex. Is the unit old and not functioning properly? Jeesh. 4951

@Drekonix: Interesting thread, as I just called Reliant and learned something (or two new) and I'm going to start looking for a new plan as well (with another provider). I've been with them for 25 yrs, always heard everybody selling electricity plans at 12 cents a KW, ect, and knew I was getting an average of 10 cents, w/out a contract with Reliants Power Tracker plan, says it goes up and down, but really stays at around 10.But...I finally paid attention to my bill, and even though it is around 10, there's a Centerpoint charge for       $9.45 per month and 3.5724¢ per kWh, which puts it up to actually 14 cents. I called Reliant and she said it's the same CP charge for all plans. For you, since you are moving, I'd just tell them to move you to a power tracker plan, it's month to month. For others with other carriers, do they all have the CP charge as Reliant does??? If so, there probably isn't any reason for me to shop.BTW-within the last month, ADC had a thread going on about this with a couple good websites to check all carriers rates.

@cgm10sne1: I think that's about right, assuming you have electric heat? Mine, during the winter (1900 sf), is around $70 to 80 during winter (Reliant) and around $50 for CP, but I have gas heating. During the summer, my gas bill is less than $20 (live by myself), but electric doesn't get over $250 (and I keep mine at 70 most of the time.

That does seem high for an apartment. Like others said the unit may be older may also depend on how you use your elecricity too. We have 2400 sq ft house. Always washing clothes and trying to turn off lights and unplug things that are not being used and our bill this month was 73.00 with Hino we have a 3 month contract that is up in a couple weeks. There is no service fee. You have to shop and know your average consumption. I have called in to companies before and they have the same rates as online the only time some would offer me a discount was if it went with a 9 month or a year contract. Good luck. 4951

there is another site which also includes all the fees that some companies charge &  others don't. I can't remember what it is off the top of my head, But believe me, you may need to do a spread sheet to figure out what company offes the best rates. 4951

I'm floored at how confusing all this energy and gas stuff is here.Centerpoint should be your gas supplier and that bill is for both the gas and transportation.  Centerpoint also owns the electric transmission lines so you pay them to bring you the electricity that you bought from Gexa - that should all be on one bill.As for shopping around, you can get a bunch of different deals but I usually sign up for the 24 month program.  Figure with gas so cheap now it can only go up and drag the rates with it.    4951

I have used Cirro Energy for years and have been very happy with them. Great rates and they have a few different plans to choose from.
