Now I know some people are great and will take care of their animals whether they paid for them or not but they are an exception.

We ask for a vet reference and check ID's.  If we ask for money on a rescue we give part of it back for toys, ect.  Also, spay/neuter rebates.  It's never "a one size fits all" BUT then you do have to be very careful nowadays who you allow into your home or to meet a stranger.  The times have changed. 4951

We had to rehome our dog before we moved here and I had it posted as that there was a fee for him. I received quite a few emails and, when told what the fee was, many were horrified and told me that I would never receive any kind of money for an 18-mo old, unneutered pure bred dog, with AKC papers.  ?! I did find a man who paid and took our dog to train him to be a therapy dog for himself (early stages MS). The gentlemen visited us (and the dog) several times over a span of two weeks before we gave the dog to him. The fellow still sends me pics of Kodi every month and my kids even picked out a couple of toys to mail to him and his dog brother for Valentine's Day.  So, you're right - NEVER give away a dog. There's just too many unknowns. Emoticon 4951

You are right to say that there are exceptions and I will say that I am one of them. I recently acquired a dog on Kingwood.com and am absolutely in love with him. He is my running buddy and best friend. I am glad that I was able to get him and he fits in so well with my family. Oh yeah, he was FREE! I can't thank the lady enough for allowing me to home a wonderful buddy. Emoticon

I really do not see why people complain about a fee for a dog especially from a rescue organization.  If get a dog for free and need to have it fixed that is at least $100.00.  Not to mention all the shots that are needed. If you go to the shelter $80.00 gets an animal that has been fully vetted. Most rescues have higher fees to offset the costs of animals that need more care.  Either way, I would rather pay rescue or shelter for an animal than get one for "free." 4951

I paid $197 for this mixed puppy from the SPCA last December. Micro chipped, vaccinated, and neutered. Worth every penny! Oops...the pic didn't post. :-(  4951

@noel: Part of that also probably went to help cover an animal's surgery or get meds for one with mange or another illness. Kudos for adopting

Finally figured out how to post a pic! This is the pup I adopted. Probably lab/rottie/catahoula. You never know what you are going to get from the SPCA!

Free to a good home could mean leaving the folks at the home with more money, so they could easier meet the expenses that make a good home. That's what it would mean in my case. 4951

It's been my experience that if someone cannot afford to pay an adoption fee they cannot afford the care of the animal.  One has to wonder what happens if the animal gets sick or has an accident and needs to go to ER?Annuals alone run at least 100.00 then add flea/tick and heartworm prevention and food.I alway recommend to someone not wanting to charge a fee to charge it up front then reimburse once the animal has been to the vet and new owners bring back proof of such. 4951
