Don't make me come over there. I'm as serious as when I said, "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor."

@fcabanski: If you were President facing this situation what would be your course of action?  Would you commit the country to another ground war or better yet threaten the use of nuclear weapons?

I am very fine with letting those knuckleheads solve their own problems. We have lost enough lives to that side of the globe. 4951

The price gets high enough drilling doors will open. I prefer we use theirs now and have ours for later.  4951

In my view this situation has no nexus to oil.  In fact the U.S. is producing more oil domestically than it has in quite a few years.  Accordingly, we have reduced our dependence on oil imports. The crux of this matter is this.  Ukraine is a former Soviet satellite country.  After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia continued to maintain a huge military presence in the Crimea.  Along with that at least half of the population of Ukraine view themselves as pro-Russia.  So on top of everything else there could be potentially a civil war brewing among the Ukrainian people. The U.S. is part of the NATO Alliance which was formed to blunt Soviet aggression during the cold war.  As such any potential military confrontation between Russia and the U.S. would then obligate the Alliance to become involved.  In that instance we could potentially have the beginnings of WW III.This not an easy scenario for any President of the United States.  When Russia invaded Georgia in August 2008, another former satellite country, the U.S. wisely chose not to intervene militarily in my opinion as there had to be a calculation whether the spilling of American blood was justified in that instance.  Personally I don't think most Americans have a stomach for another war right now.  We are still trying to extricate ourselves from Afghanistan.  As for President Obama, I don't think he's weak at all when it comes to ordering military responses.  He ordered the killing of Osama Bin Laden, he authorized the toppling of the Libyan President, his administration has been relentless in the ordering of drone strikes on terrorist.  What I do think is he considers using military force very, very carefully before making a decision.  Because he realizes the consequences of his decision might cause more American families to lose their loved ones in uniform. 4951

@rocket: eerily similar to the liberal argument about having abortions: "what are they supposed to do, bring a baby into poverty?" No...they should have been responsible to begin with and they wouldn't have ended up in that situation.

Charles Krauthammer said it well.  This is multiple levels removed from a real response. After Russia sent troops, Obama threatened to talk to the international community about meeting to discuss a written response that threatens discussing action. 4951

@rocket: ill try again. No. I dont expect being committed to a third war. As a matter of fact. Hell no. But when the President's repeated foreign policy bungling and sustained exhibition of weakness on the international stage emboldens the enemy and invites them to thumb their nose at the US, he cant make excuses. Being tough and competent prevents it. Peace thorough strength.

Anybody remember when O leaned over and whispered to Putin "I'll have more flexibility after I get re-elected"?  At that point, Putin knew that those two raisins in his fist were O's balls. The comment was picked up by microphones.  I may not have the wording exactly right, but the part about O's balls is accurate.  4951
