The Kingwood Observer Reported that a few residents got together to end the vine problem..."Long, brown and green vines stretching from
tree to tree in the medians of Kingwood Drive have long been an eyesore
for Dr. Michael Woehst."Apparently this group of people got together and removed the vine menace....So did you guys think their was a vine problem? I personally never took issue with it, however I haven't driven down Kingwood Dr. in about a week so I'm not sure what it looks like now that the work has been done. 4951

Both Kingwood Dr and North Park have a vine problem.  In some places, you can't see the trees for the vines.  These vines are very intrusive.  They start out small and climb up any available tree.  Once they get high enough, they grow out toward the sun (edge of the trees) and then droop down.  When they get thick enough, they actually block the sun from getting to the tree.  As the vine grows, its base gets larger and becomes very "woody" like a small tree.  They are not as bad as Kudzu vines, but if left uncontrolled, they will smother the host trees. 4951

@Retired_Engineer:I can see that point of view, the original article was presented in a way where it seemed like the residents who removed them were only complaining about them being unsightly and not intrusive. 4951

@Drekonix:  I don't know the reasons why the people in that article cut down the vines.  Last year, before I had my front yard landscaped, we found several of these vines growing in our trees.  We hadn't noticed them until they started drooping from high in the tree, almost to the ground.  I back-traced the vines to find the bases so I could cut them.  I found several bases that appeared to be small trees.  I had to cut them with a saw as they were 1-2 inches in diameter and were woody.   I remember doing research on them at that time and found that they are becoming a serious problem in Texas.  They like to grow on the edges of wooded areas so that they can climb and then hang down to get the most sunlight.  Once I knew what to look for, that's when I noticed that Kingwood Dr and North Park are becoming inundated with them.  The sides and medians of these roads are just the kind of place these vines like.  I wish I could remember the name of these vines.

I not sure if I know of anywhere on the Greenbelts, medians etc where there is not a vine or Youpon problem.  They are vicious and unsightly and as suckers they kill the trees.  It would look so nice if they were cleaned up.  I myself am wondering why the KW residents have to do this?  The median now belongs to the City and the Greenbelts the trail associations etc so why do they not provide proper maintenance? 4951

@tatertot58: Seriously??   The City of Houston??????  yeah right....  I don't mean to sound like a smart **** but the City can't even control the most serious issues much less vines..

Best thing to do on the greenbelt to get rid of the vines is to wait for Fall.  Get you a small dixie cup and pour in some round up.  Take it out to the vine, and cut the vine back to the ground.  Leave enough of the vine to stick into the Round Up.  The vine will suck the Round Up right to root and kill it.This method is the only one I have found for getting rid of poison ivy as well.

@Fallon:  Unfortunately, the base of these vines grow thick and woody and look just like a small tree.  You almost have to do like we did, trace the vine back to it's origin (it's base).  If it's more than a year or so old, you won't be able to bend the base root portion remaining.  We dug the roots up.I also had a small Chinese Tallow in our backyard.  I cut it down, but the root base would send up new shoots each year.  I bought some "Stump Killer" and that finally killed it.  You drill a hole (or holes) in the base root and poor in the Root Killer.  I'm sure it would work on the vines as well.

I liked the vines and trees when I moved here in the early 90's.  The vines and trees and green stuff were why I wanted to live in the area.  That's why Kingwood is called "Liveable Forest".Yes, power lines went down during storms.  I'd take that over the constant drone of traffic. Why did you move into the "Liveable Forest" if you don't like trees and vines and green stuff? 4951

I came for the schools and would rather deal with 59 traffic over 45. I lived in an actual forest before coming here. Ugly pine trees where not what I was looking for. 4951

@fcabanski:  I also moved here in the early 90's.  I like the "green stuff" but those vines will eventually smother the trees, the trees will die, and so will the vines.  No more pretty "green stuff".  Somewhere in the late 90's, I think Kingwood lost the whole idea of the "Liveable Forest".  There have been a hell of a lot of trees cut down since I moved here.  New developments were clear-cut and still are.Kudzu is green.  I guess you would be happy if it took over Kingwood?

@Retired_Engineer.  We lost a larger tree during Ike.  I hated that tree.  Got the stump ground.  Still had off shoots for 2 years coming up.  I got tired of it.  So I got my dh's drill and drilled holes up and down the roots I could find.  Poured Round Up in them while muttering die, die, die!  It worked.  Haven't had an offshoot in over a year nowEmoticon  The neighbors still give me weird looks.  But that could be my driving.

@Fallon:   I got a great mental image of you holding a drill muttering "die, die, die"!   Emoticon
