So we've been in our new house for 2 weeks now and our yard guys are coming Thursday and I'm trying to find out if its too late to have the crepe myrtles trimmed. I hate to pay them to cut them and them not bloom because its too late. Anyone know if its too late or perfect time or if I should wait another two weeks 4951

I know it's popular, but I hate to see people cut back their crapes myrtles so much that the main branches end up with knobs on the end. 4951

The house we moved into has been vacant for 2 years so they weren't covered when we had the freezes so that's why I thought they needed to be trimmed. Will the yard guys know how much to trim or do I need to tell them 4951

@Irispixies: They should know if not you need to fire them and replace them with a new crew.

@Irispixies: I'd have to see it to be able to tell you, it's not a matter of inches..

My husband trims everything in spring & it blooms.  He would never cut or prune anything before April. Now me I'm really foreign to this stuff so when do the crepe myrtles bloom? 4951

My landscaper trimmed my Crepe Myrtles about 1 1/2 weeks ago.  We have to trim ours because the Crepe Myrtles are too close to the house.  I would have no idea when things need to be trimmed because coming from the North, we would trim around Memorial Day.   4951

You can prune creeps back to the large knob. This can be done anytime now. If you do not prune the branches with last years blooms they spend more energy trying to grow out and the blooms are smaller. Some people cut off below the knobs but that sometimes causes the tree to grow into odd shapes. I trim mine to the knob every year about the 1st of March and they bloom in June/July. 4951
