Bought myself and my mommy a new laptop, with Windows 8 of course, heard all the negative stories, but did it anyway. For me, yea, 8 is a hassle (actually a cpl things that I like better), but I'm getting used to it. My mom (who's previous LT had XP), is about to go crazy. And the big thing, our computer guy at the office just told me I can't VPN in on 8, or have any other "stuff" I need for the office, so I have to do something.I googled it, and read you can, and read you can't (I don't have 8 Pro, that comes with an authorized downgrade to 7), that HP (and others) have made it to where the drivers do not work on a computer that came with 8 when downgrading. I just talked to a guy that said he can put 7 (Ultimate for me, Home for my mom), along with office for both no problem, just wondering if anybody's been successful, had issues, ect.  4951

i just bought one with 8 to replace a computer with 7 on it. the techie where i bought it said you can roll it back to 7 but  you'll have to check youtube to see how to do it since they get fired for telling you how.... i booted the thing up the other day and one of the first things it wants to do is sync every thing you own but the toaster to be in common. are they NUTS? that means anyone manages to steal or hack one thing and bingo they are into everything you own. try googling the problem and check youtube. and by the way, you can buy windows 7 as low as 80 bucks and we are talking a legit disc to install, not a counterfeit or a bootleg 4951

I would just format it and install 7. Removes all the crap they push on the new systems too.

Thx for all the info, I've watched a few of the youtube videos, it looks simple, but I'm going to go ahead and let this computer repair place install it, as he has 7 Ultimate, and also adding Office and a few more programs that cost $ for a really good price. Plus, I hear there can be issues with loading it, so just in case.

@Queen_of_Spayeds: I've learned a lot of shortcuts (found the desktop that makes internet browsing the same as 7) by googling, like eliminating having to put in a password every time, ect. I could probably deal with 8 if it was compatible with our office programs I'm required to have installed. Its like every time I need to do something (yesterday I tried to pull up a .mov video that was emailed to me, wouldn't pull up, googled it, found out you need quicktime, but QT is not compatible with 8, only 7 or XP, wth? Just makes everything a hassle. I had to google how to turn it off, isn't nothing simple.

I bought a PC last year with Windows 8 on it.  I absolutely hated it the first few weeks. I upgraded to v 8.1 which helped with a few things.  Eventually, I learned to go to the Desktop and pretty much ignore the Start screen.@cador:  Not being able to run work programs was a killer.   4951

8.1 keeps popping up on mine to download, but since I knew I would be switching to 7, I haven't, but have heard it helps some. I just talked to the computer place, and asked them the question about what I've read about issues in switching from 8 to 7 (the YT videos explain how, and don't say much about the issues, but google it and you'll read PC Mag and a few resources talking about mfrs (HP being one) are in bed with MS, and have made their machine's not take the downgrade like they should (drivers not working, some software not working, ect) so 8 would be the main (only) op system for a while). He said "good question", as in addition to smaller issues, there are issues with touch screens not working (don't have one, so I'm good there), as well as wireless cards and sound cards not linking after the downgrade. He took my model # to do some research to make sure before we go forward.  4951

windows 7 is still available on ordered machines until around halloween. (appropriate yes?) every new os they bring out has fewer user options and more set in stone choices that you may not want. remember the progression....95 bad, 98 good, millenium bad, xp good, vista bad, 7 good, 8 bad, 9 might be good if history repeats..and 9 will be out in 2015... 4951

I rec'd the computers back, 7 is so much more simpler to use than 8, that's for sure. Also, if anybody needs a good computer guy, he did good work, for cheap. Pm me for his #, he does every thing and has most all software. He deleted 8, added 7 Ultimate, along with MS Office 2013 Pro, and Mcafee Enterprise (said the subscription never runs out so its good for ever) to 2 new HP LT's, transferred my pics/favorites, transferred my moms, as well as from her other older computer, for $150. 4951

I haven't found Windows 8 to be that bad. I've had my new computer for a year now. I went from Windows XP to 8 - so there was a real difference. My computer is a touch screen so it works well with Windows 8. 4951
