Dh and I are remodeling our master bath. We have done all sorts of projects and have learned to expect surprises and low quality work from either the original builder or the last contractor who worked on the house. Today topped the list for the dumbest and worst work ever done on any house we have ever owned. I just can't believe that builders have absolutely no pride or quality when it comes to building a house.

BTW if you have a house that was built in the 80's with a step down shower you may want to consider replacing that shower soon. What we found was Unbelieveable. And it was probably the grossest clean up job I've ever done! 4951

We're starting our master bath remodel in the next few weeks. We're not doing it on our own though (DH doesn't have time for it). I'm a nervous wreck about what they're going to find when they rip the shower tile out! DH isn't worried about it, but I know better! 4951

Was there a body under the floor? One house I owned had a village of elves living inside the walls.  They were tasked with holding together the house's frame.  The builders had been too lazy to connect the frame with nails. 4951

@fcabanski: well... Remember how they got rid of bodies in Breaking Bad- well what we found looked like the aftermath of that- brown slime sludge because
1- they didn't put a seal between the drain and the shower pan allowing water to seep between the pan and the foundation

2) on the step over ( curb) into the shower the morons used a block of wood as a sub floor for the cultured marble- and when the water from the drain hit it - rotten wood resulted. Then termites found it- we found tons of termites- THANK GOD they were limited to that-we took everything to the studs and inspected everything! The smell was overwhelming!! We gotta let it dry out and get rid of the mildew. At least the gross part is done

We have one of those huge jetted tubs in the master.  Eight years, never used except to fill the mop bucket - hot water gets there the fastest. 4951

I know so many this has happened to in the last couple of years @Jpgurl.I know because of this, we are hiring this one out.I want to remove my massive soaker tub and put in something like the new claw foot tubs with jets.  Who even uses a tub anymore?  But we need to have one for resale. They are a pia to clean and we never use it now that our kids are bigger.

@Fallon: yea we got rid of the tub and I don't care about resale. We are putting in a huge shower- it will have a rain shower and a regular shower head with multiple setting and a dry area with a bench- and it'll be a walk in with no doors.
We built a house in Ohio with no spa tub just a giant shower and the house sold in two weeks so I don't believe a tub helps in resale. A designer told us people are moving away from the tubs because they're impossible to clean- and you should've seen the black water in the hoses!!!! We've only used it 3 times in 12 years.

ET- no we didn't notice the smell. I the summer the whole room smelled musty. The rotten wood and termites were totally containe under the marble. The water leakage came from under the marble between the pan and the foundation because they didn't seal the pan to the drain. The termites got in probably between the foundation and the house. We didn't find any tubes going in or on the studs. We are constantly inspecting the house for that- we had termites in Ohio. Emoticon

The parents of a student I tutor had the same problem.  While having new tile installed, they discovered rotten wood and termites.  In addition to fixing the issue, the home owners decided to do some remodeling.  They wanted a recessed shower of a certain size.  The contractor built the shower, but he neglected to account for the thickness of the walls in the measurement.  So the shower was tiny. 4951

I am a tub person....  It's the only time I get to relax with my book and sometimes a glass of wine ......   Last year when I spent a few months in and out of the hospital and forced only to shower and not take baths....   I was totally bummed out.....   I even cheated, just could not take showers only....  I also think it has to do with the fact that our shower head sucks.....  and anytime I even think about a shower.....SOMEONE wants to join in....... 4951

@GoldenGirl: LMAO- those days aren't quite as common as they used to be BUT I'm sure there will be an initiation of the new bathroom 😊. I'm certainly thankful for my handy hubby and he's thankful I will dig in ( no matter how gross ) and help.
Rest assured KDC I will be having dreams that will mix Breaking Bad's body disposal methods mixed with Stephen King's IT complete with scary clown tonight. I already told hubby that the bathroom door will remain closed until the shower pan and drain is done!! Yes I am creeped out

I am not a tub person but both sister-in-laws are.  They soak in the tub everyday!  So some people really do want the the tub.  I do not like sitting in the tub.  I feel it is not as clean because you will always find hair or something in the tub! 4951

Who has time to sit in a tub?  Not my thing but I would never remove it b/c of resale value. Do we need more than 1tub? I have a tub upstairs, but master bath is old with a "roman" tub. Step down into it for the shower. 4951
