Remember it started with Bush, but Obama didn't end it like he said either. The government is considering enlarging the National Security Agency's controversial collection of Americans' phone records—an unintended consequence of lawsuits seeking to stop the surveillance program, according to officials.A number of government lawyers involved in lawsuits over the NSA phone-records program believe federal-court rules on preserving evidence related to lawsuits require the agency to stop routinely destroying older phone records, according to people familiar with the discussions. As a result, the government would expand the database beyond its original intent, at least while the lawsuits are active. 4951

As shown in another thread, a lot of Texans in Congress voted to EXTEND the Patriot Act.  It seems that once the feds take away some of our rights or privacy, they NEVER  give them back. The Republicans are just as bad as the Democrats on this. 4951

Again why are we so worried about the NSA when Amazon and Google has just about as much information on us if not more? 4951

Like Rocket, I think it's kind of interesting that people are so worried about the NSA knowing all this info about you, when you willingly put all this info on the internet, anyway. How many of you have your phone number, the place you work, the names of your kids, pictures of your kids and family dog, how many years you've been married, what position you work at, where you went to school on your Facebook? If I friended all of you and I scrolled down a year's worth of posts and updates, I would know just as much as the NSA does about you. Some of you post pics of yourselves on message boards like these. A lot of you guys not only know each other's names, but meet on a regular basis. Since I've been here, a couple of you have posted your email and facebook information for any weird to see. I had a friend yesterday post her address on Facebook and share the status with not only her friends but friends of her friends. But you're worried about the NSA?A lot of us are our own worst enemies. For a bunch of people who claim they don't want strangers knowing their private information, we sure sometimes don't show it. 4951

To me, the NSA gathering information is a valuable tool to help track down and perhaps prevent possible foreign criminal/terrorism activity...Those who are blowing this up are actually handicapping this country's ability to protect it's citizens to the fullest...I'm not going to be concerned about the NSA and the info it gathers *UNLESS* it starts appearing as evidence in the courts... 4951

@bubbleyes72:  I have a Facebook account ONLY so I can see pictures of my sister,  nephews, and their kids. My page has very little info on it.  Other than that, I don't use Facebook.  Don't use Twitter or Instagram.

I'm not convinced gathering information is near as big a deal as some of the other things, say, rights erosion, will be in the long run. After all, the IRS has a ton of information on all of us. 4951

QUESTIONS,,,If they have reduced the deficiet by ___ trillion,, then why do they say they need to raise the deficiet amount, so they wont default?if they say that ___ millions of jobs were made,, then why are there more people losing jobs,, and less people filing for unemployment?if they say the health care act is supposed to help people,, then why are so many people losing good policies, or they wont allow same sex couples to be on the same policy 4951

you're mixing two things in your first question. the deficit is the amount that incoming revenue does not cover. and it isn't the deficit that congress had to vote on; it is the debt ceiling which is the limit of idebtedness allowed by the government. to do otherwise is to default on debts which have already been approved by congress.. your second question is similarly mixing apples and oranges. just because a job is created in one place, doesn't mean that a job elsewhere is secure. many corporations have learned to get along with fewer employees by dumping more work on the ones they keep thus corporate profits are at all-time records even tho unemployment persists as a problem since (gasp) corporations are refusing to hire or as many employment agencies have attested, the directive from those looking for employees to hire is 'don't send us anyone who isn't currently employed' the evidence about healthcare is that it is doing well for many people and yes there will be changes in policies for a lot of people. as far as gay couples, how do you know this? it might be true of some companies but then again it might not. remember these policies are all issued by companies, not the govt. they were changed in many instances because they don't meet new minimum standards for a healthcare policy 4951

"it is the debt ceiling which is the limit of idebtedness allowed by the government. to do otherwise is to default on debts"FalseThe government has money, in the form of tax income, to service the debt.  That means they wouldn't default. The debt ceiling is 100% about spending.  If the government stopped over spending last time it reached the debt ceiling, it wouldn't currently need to increase the debt ceiling. The debt ceiling is supposed to exist in case of an emergency, such as a war.  But liberals are spending every penny they don't have right up to the debt ceiling. 4951

your supposition that he debt ceiling is for war only is incorrect.funny but it was also republicans who voted yes on the debt ceiling, they also voted yes on tarpa which bailed out the banks, a program devised by the previous administration to salvage the financial system from a complete collapse brought on by unscrupulous and unethical bankers and mortgage lenders...just call it wall street for short. and funny at least one conservative actually was an investment banker at the time and sent letters around extolling the necessity of and lauding the tarpa bill tho he now denies it and in fact says he didn't know what was going on...piffle..the basic *****ing is about what is being cut, not what the spending is...or as the asian saying goes, it depends on whose rice bowl gets filled. 4951
