Two year old girl killed in Temple, TX yesterday. When will people understand that this is a KILLER BREED???? It's not the owners, it's the breed. You never know when they will turn killer! Too many fatalities associated with this breed. Statistics don't lie. 4951

Every dog is a killer breed.  Every human has the capability to kill as well.  Most are taught not to.  4951

Every dog is NOT a killer. Please check the statistics. It's a known fact that the pit breeds are bred for aggression and they are also bred to do more damage with their jaw power. When did you last hear of the family poodle or Sheltie killing its owner? We do NOT want this breed running loose in our neighborhoods. They easily chew through their fencing and become a dangerous menace to the neighborhood. 4951

@doodlebug Read this article. PEOPLE did this to the pit bull. If a bad person wants to train a pitbull to be a killer, the dog will be a killer because they are loyal to their owner and very smart and highly trainable.

@doddlebug: I have a Siberian Husky...people think the he's a killer too.  Could he be?  Of course, but he's trained not to be.  German Shepherds are are known to be viscous dogs as well but are they?  They are trained to be that way in the military and police to subdue criminals.  Does that make them a killer?  No, they are trained, in fact they are one of the smartest breeds out there.  The fact is a dog is an animal and react to how they are treated or trained.  A dog is not a human, they do things they are taught in order to please their human master.  In fact, you want to use smaller breeds as an example.  I owned a minature schnauzer that was the friendliest dog ever but if you made a hostile move toward me he would bite you and not let go.  Why?  Because I trained him to do that.

You don't want them running loose in the neighborhoods?  Did they just appear there, or was it irresponsible humans who didn't take care of the dog to begin with or dump the dog off after they couldn't take care of it anymore or because they trained it to fight and it lost?

Seems to me that the common problem is the Human who owned or trained the dog.  To think anything else is ignorant.  Just my opinion. 4951

@MTechnique: I don't completely agree with you on that.  Many animals are born with some natural, instinctual characteristics.  Examples are a herding instinct, sniffing other dogs butts, rolling in or eating feces or rotting animals, the role of dominance, the ability to swim (or not), a preference to be part of a pack (think wolves) OR a family,  detect when a female dog is in heat, as well as the act of mating.  No owner or trainer taught them these things (at least I hope so!  Emoticon  ), but dogs can usually be taught to modify or control some of these actions.Dogs that have been bred for their aggressiveness MAY have that instinct from birth.  Owners/trainers MAY be able to help the dog learn to modify or control that instinct, but there is no 100% way to be positive.Because of this, I will not own a pit bull, German Shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiler, or any other breed that has a history of being bred for aggressiveness.  To me, it's not worth the risk.  I favor other breeds of dogs that have a more gentle nature; however, I realize that even they are capable or biting and attacking.  But the risk is much lower.

Every animal that had jaws, teeth, claws, etc has the capacity to kill. I suppose your cat could kill you, if it really wanted to.  Every animal has the ability to be killers. However, there are some breeds, whether you're talking about dogs or otherwise, that are known to be more aggressive animals: it's in their DNA. As @Retired_Engineer said, as the owner, you can try to help your dog control those aggressive behaviors and hey, some pit bull owners go through the dog's whole life without an incident. However, pit bulls are known for their aggressive natures: I can't remember the last time I heard about a Golden Retriever attacking and killing a child. I'm not saying not to own a pit bull: it's certainly within your rights to do so. However, if you're going to be an owner of the animal, you have to be educated about the risks and not let your love for the breed blind you about the statistics.  4951

it helps to get the story instead of just screeching. There is a whole laundry list full of things done wrong that resulted in the child's death. it wasn't the family's dog so it was in a different environment than the dog was accustomed to. the child had unsupervised contact with the dog (and no one has any idea what occurred in that contact, only that the child is dead)

TEMPLE, Texas (AP) - A 2-year-old Central Texas girl is dead after a dog her family was watching for a friend attacked her.
Temple police say Je'vaeh Mayes died Monday afternoon at Scott & White Memorial Hospital after the late-morning attack.
Police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox says the pit bull
mix was being kept in the backyard of the child's family's home when the
girl went out into the yard without her parents' knowledge.
The dog attacked, fatally injuring the girl. Wilcox says animal control officers have quarantined the dog. 4951

I worked at a kennel for almost 2 years and was bitten three times. By a great dane, rottweiler and boston terrier. My co-worker was bit by a poodle.  We had pit bulls kennel there the whole time I worked there and I did not feel threatened at all by any of them. I understand people's fear of them but I wish people would realize ANY dog can attack, especially if they feel scared or threatened. I don't even let our 2 year old mess with our 2 chihuahuas who we have had since birth because I know how dogs can be. Not pit bulls, DOGS. When we are out walking, I do not let our daughter run up to any dog, leashed or unleashed, pit bull, poodle, golden retriever, etc. because you never know what can happen.. 4951

@mrsames77: I worked at a kennel too...Dachsunds we the ones who but there and were always under quarantine. I was bitten by a shih tzu.  We did have to make sure the pits couldn't get out they-they were escape artists.  The only animal I was seriously hurt by was a 160lb mastiff breed-he dragged me into a metal fence post and gave me a concussion.
