The King has Spoken.... I still do not know how I got on his e mail list! Maybe the NSA told him I am a Tea Party member.Hello everyone,Earlier today, I signed an Executive Order to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 for federal contract workers. It's the right thing to do. But what's more, companies have found that when their employees earn more, they're more motivated, they work harder, and they stick around longer. You should expect the same of your federal government. The bottom line is this: We are a nation that believes in rewarding honest work with honest wages. And America deserves a raise. If you agree, let me know you're standing with me -- and take a look at what else we're going to do in 2014.The order I signed today will help folks across the country. But it's not enough.Right now, there's a bill in Congress that would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour for all Americans. It would lift wages for more than 28 million current workers, and would move millions of Americans out of poverty. That means businesses would have customers with more money to spend.Raising the minimum wage would grow the economy for everyone. You don't need to believe me: Believe the 600 economists -- including seven Nobel Prize winners -- who wrote both houses of Congress last month to remind them that the bill before them will have little or no negative effect on jobs. When I stood before both chambers of Congress and said that I intended for 2014 to be a year of action, that wasn't just a nice line in a speech. It was an acknowledgment that we've got to restore opportunity for everyone in America -- the idea that no matter who you are, or how you started out, you can get ahead here if you're responsible and willing to work for it. That's what this "year of action" is all about. And since that speech, I have taken actions on my own to make it easier for folks to save for retirement, help working Americans get the skills that good jobs demand, and assist millions of Americans who have been looking for work for several months. I've announced a major new commitment toward connecting our schools to 21st-century technology. That action continues today, and in the months to come.Take a look at what we've done already and what's to come.Thank you,President Barack Obama 4951

I think the minimum wage does need to be increased, considering the current wage doesn't even account for all the inflation going on. However a sudden, drastic increase such as this one has the power to completely destroy small businesses that don't have the profits to subsidize the increase. Plus, this huge increase also can bring about a higher cost of living as companies raise prices to accommodate the new expense. That would essentially put us right back at the beginning to where we are now. So does the minimum wage need to be increased, yes, but I think it would be more beneficial to an already hurting economy to do it as a gradual increase.

Plus, the executive order only applies to NEW workers. What about the employees that have been there longer and now find themselves making less than people barely hired? I'm sure that is not going to help company morale. I'm not an economics major though, so I could be wrong about everything. This is just my thoughts. 4951

Let's look at Obama's comments:It's
the right thing to do.    Maybe.  It sounds good, but where are the supporting facts?  There's a lot of things that are the "right thing to do" but he ignores those. But what's more, companies have found that when
their employees earn more, they're more motivated, they work harder, and
they stick around longer.   What are the supporting facts behind this statement?  I don't think the people at McDonalds are going to work any harder than they are now, even if they make more money.  Automatically raising people's pay without any merit or work history basis does NOTHING to improve motivation. You should expect the same of your federal
government.  I expect the federal government to butt out of issues that they don't need to be involved in. If the federal government wants to do something, provide some training so people can improve themselves (if they so desire) and not have to work on minimum wage.  The bottom line is this: We are a nation that believes in rewarding honest work with honest wages.  What a crock!  Federal employees, especially the President, should be banned from using the words honest and honesty!  This sentence certainly doesn't support what is going on with the various forms of welfare.  People in many states are making MORE off of welfare than they can with a minimum wage job, so there is NO INCENTIVE to get off of welfare.  In the normal, twisted logic of a politician, the answer is to raise the minimum wage.  How long would it then take before welfare benefits are increased again to be above the new minimum wage?!  What about rewarding honest work with honest wages.... I'm all for it.  Prove to me that there will be more work for more pay.Raising the minimum wage would grow the economy for everyone.  Sure, with that first paycheck.  Then small businesses will need to increase their prices because they are having to pay more in wages.  Then everything balances out again, but everybody is paying more for the same items. You don't need to
believe me: Believe the 600 economists -- including seven Nobel Prize
winners -- who wrote both houses of Congress last month to remind them
that the bill before them will have little or no negative effect on
jobs.      I sure as hell DO NOT BELIEVE YOU, nor do I believe "600" economists.... most of whom have probably never held a real world job (just as Obama has never held a real world job).  It's easy to sit in a classroom or in a think tank and talk economy, but I'll bet they never talked to small businessmen that will have to lay people off or reduce their hours because some economist was wrong. When
I stood before both chambers of Congress and said that I intended for
2014 to be a year of action, that wasn't just a nice line in a speech.
It was an acknowledgment that we've got to restore opportunity for
everyone in America -- the idea that no matter who you are, or how you
started out, you can get ahead here if you're responsible and willing to
work for it. That's what this "year of action" is all about. And
since that speech, I have taken actions on my own to make it easier for
folks to save for retirement, help working Americans get the skills
that good jobs demand, and assist millions of Americans who have been
looking for work for several months. I've announced a major new
commitment toward connecting our schools to 21st-century technology.  That action continues today, and in the months to come.Oh, I believe there will be plenty of executive actions.  Executive actions from a president that is intent on moving our country towards Socialism and is willing to bypass 2/3 of our Constitutionally defined leadership (Legislative and Judicial branches) just so he can push his agenda on the American people.  The rest of this comment is just political blathering. 4951

I think it does need to be increased a bit for inflation, but certainly not any more than $10 an hour. I am young, and I remember when I thought I was BALLING making $7/hr back in 2006. Now, $7/hr is nothing and definitely not enough for basic needs. 4951

@Zephard: exactly.  I just pray that collapse doesn't happen in my life time!  But I am afraid that for our grandchildren and their children alike it will!Like someone said "We need to freshen up how to speak Chinese"

Raising the minimum wage looks good to people, who want to make a lot of money for doing very little work. 4951

@Katiemcg: Why? If you can make a good living with little or no skills on an artificial "minimum wave," what is the point in staying in school and /or improving your skills or education.

Liberals see the world the way they want it to be.

Conservatives see the world the way it is. Obama wants to think if you just pay people more, they will work harder and everyone will be happy. Conservatives understand that artificially dictating wages in a planned economy hurts everyone.

I just kept waiting for the pink, fuzzy bomb to drop on this thread.  Wow, hasn't happened yet.  Should be anytime now.I agree with every single post on here thus far.  Raise the minimum wage that high, that quick and you will see a huge jump in prices for everything else.  Those of us that put the time, effort and money into a higher degree will then, in the scheme of things, be making much less than we were.  Great incentive, again, to better yourself huh? 4951

I work with a bunch of people that aren't worth the $7.25 we pay them, let alone more. I cannot fathom being forced to pay them increasingly more. 4951
