HOUSTON (FOX 26) -Cyclist Archana Williams has had some close calls with vehicles on the road."It's ridiculously hard to bike around this city and it's not because of the roads or the infrastructure; it's just due to the aggressive nature of our drivers," said Williams. She says she's been run off the road several times by impatient drivers who refuse to share a lane."For them it's just a couple of minutes off their drive but for me, it's my life potentially, them making those risky moves around me," she said.It's why the city of Houston Wednesday passed a safe passing ordinance. It's aimed at protecting cyclists, pedestrians and other non-vehicular road users from vehicles by requiring drivers to keep their distance. According to the ordinance drivers have to stay at least three feet from cyclists while they are one the road and six feet for commercial vehicles. Similar laws have been passed in San Antonio, Fort Worth and Austin where there has been a high number of vehicle/bicycle accidents.Read more: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/story/22200847/2013/05/08/houston-passes-ordinance-to-protect-cyclist#ixzz2sVQkBCWF 4951

I just had this discussion tonight with my husband. He rides his bike alot around Kgwd. The mayor & city council want to register bicycles like they register cars to improve "infrastructure" for bikes. The money from registering your bikes wouId go to improve the infrastructure for bikers. I think  Kgwd residents should be exempt, we have have bike/greenbelt trails. I bet few to none Kgwd residents take their bikes into Houston to ride... They are improving trails along Memorial Park, so why should the people of Kgwd. pay to have better areas for city people to ride.That's just my opinion... 4951

The roads are built and maintained on gas taxes and registration fees.  Motorists pay for the roads in most part.  As such, they are just not designed to ride bikes on them.  When bicyclist start having to pay for license plates each year maybe they can have more of a say.  Some states have wide shoulders serving as bike lanes.  When you mix bikes and cars on a road made just for cars, motorcycles and trucks it creates way too many safety issues.  Heck, were so cheap we don't even provide sidewalks for the kids in most places forcing them into the roads.   4951

Hogwash on all of this.  When I drive to Minutemaid Park, there are often bike riders on the streets around the park.  There is plenty of room to go around them.  They ride near the curb, rather than in the middle of the street.People who want the government involved in bike riding aren't thinking about all the ways government will regulate and tax bike riding.- Registration fees- License- Required insurance- Required safety gear- Bike inspections- Increased number of bike traffic tickets- Safe bike riding times (Yes, they'll limit the times during which people can ride bikes.)Let bike riders worry about their own safety.  They can handle it. 4951

Yes, the story is from May 2013.  But that ordinance is a precursor to more government involvement in bike riding. 4951

I hate seeing cyclist in Kingwood on the major roads when the greenbelt is right next to them!I understand the road surface is probably better and not as curvy but they're really taking their lives in their own hands by depending on drivers to do the right thing and move over. 4951

When I see someone on a bike on the road I always think to myself that they got their license revoked on a DWI.  You see em all the time in Porter coming out of the bars.Naw, Keep your bikes off urban roads.  Take em out to the country or keep em on the Greenbelt.    4951

I don't think you can do serious cycling on the green belts. You go too fast, and ride long distances. It shouldn't have to take an ordinance for people not to be douchbags and run cyclists off the road, or not keep a safe distance. 4951

@jschiner:
Hmmm... Maybe your unicorn, but not a unicycle. I think people would be happy to share a lane with the majestic unicorn.

One day coming home from work I was on Tree Ln. It was busy in both directions. Here are two boys riding their bikes, but one was on the east side & one was on the west side of the street. It was getting dicey b/c of these two. So, I opened my window & said to the one on the right of me, thats' why we have greenbelt trails. He gave me the finger!  I hope his mother is proud of him... 4951

@thegoodwife: The KW middle school age kids on bikes are terrible. A lot are even younger than that. They just swerve around in all directions all over the street. Actual cyclists stay tight along the side.
