What symptoms make you call the DR or go the ER?

My 17th month old has had a low grade fever for 24 hrs and still has energy but not as much as usual and she is guzzling water and milk like crazy. I think she has an incisor coming through. I have been giving Motrin and Tylenol. Her appetite has been less too. She just feels so warm . The recital temp reads 100.4 with her wiggling like crazy. 4951

I agree^And, rectally speaking, (that sounds funny) 99.6 is considered normal so 100.4 is a slight fever. But it is a fever.. I know my kids ran low grade fevers while teething. Just keep pushing the fluids for sure and I hope the teeth don't hurt too much coming in!! Emoticon 4951

Just make sure she is releasing all the liquid she is taking in. I wish my kid only ever ran a low grade fever.  To this day if she has a fever its close to 104 or higher every time.   Just don't put her in a cold bath, you want to go with her temperature then add cool water to lower her temp.   I hope she starts feeling better. 4951

I agree that you can call the nurses line at your pediatrician's office. I've spoken with them a few times, way after hours, and they're helpful.

As long as she's acting pretty normal and eating and pooping and peeing that fever doesn't sound too bad 4951

Wouldn't worry unless fever gets above 102. If she's till playing and active she's ok.  teeth can cause all the ear nose and throat to hurt.  Think about having a bad tooth ache, that is what kids feel when teething. 4951

If she's fairly happy with that low-grade of a fever, I wouldn't even treat with meds. Fevers are designed to kill whatever is invading the body (it's kind of miraculous!). If it's low grade (and doesn't climb quickly), by giving her fever reducing meds, you're prolonging the issue. If she seems miserable (doesn't sound like it), it's tough for a mama to get through this. Emoticon

(You know all of this, though! Emoticon )

Keep her comfy/hydrated/happy and back off on the meds (the less meds for babies/toddlers/kids, the better. All meds are really just controlled poisons) unless you really think she needs them, and she'll feel better tomorrow!

Feel better, little one!

if the fever last more than 48 hours ( 2 days) & she sweats . It could be her teeth , but then it could be the beginning of the flu , so just to be on the safe side call & make an appt. for the end of the week , if she is better you can cancel if not then take her in . Better to be safe than sorry . 4951

I normally don't treat fevers that are less than 100.5, but if she is teething a little ibuprofen or Tylenol might make it more tolerable to her.  Just keep an eye out and get her some teething rings that you can put in the freezer to help her out. 4951

Oh yeah one  more rule of thumb, if you are taking a temp rectally subtract 1 degree.  If you are taking a temp in the armpit, then add 1 degree.  Everything is based on the oral temp and generally if your rectal temp is 100.4 then the real temp is 99.4.  Just keep an eye on her and try to do things to sooth her if she becomes fussy.  If it has been several days of this or if it gets worse with the temp or her temperament, the call the doc.  I would NEVER take my family to the ER unless it is life or death because all the germs that people bring in there.  You got some really sick puppies that go to the ER and you don't want to expose the little ones to that unless, like someone else said, breathing, lethargic, blood, or a very high temp. (like reaching 104 with medication)Good luck and keep up posted especially if you suddenly seen another pearly white pop out.  LOL 4951

I brought her to the dr this morning. She was just not herself. Good thing I did, she had a 102.4 temp and a left ear infection. We got some medicine and ice cream to make it all better.
Thanks for all the advice. 4951
