I heard on the radio yesterday that since no one can be persecuted for observing a religious holiday anyone who takes that day off for a leave of absence won't be penalized in any way. So I guess you could just call in sick for them. 4951

Unofficially, our school is saying Easter Monday and possibly Memorial Day, which I thought was odd. But, Presidents Day is an inservice day for them. I just thought they would have taken a day out from Spring break instead. 4951

Well that ought to upset DW, more than she already is. She had a meeting with the stupidest public educator we've ever met this morning, Diane Sconzo, over our kids absences due to non stop illnesses they contract at that cesspool they call a school.... 4951

Humble ISD has SO MANY professional growth days built into the school year, why can't they use one of those as make up days? 4951

Do the boys also have to wear makeup that day?  The idea seems kind of weird.  What if parents don't want their kids wearing makeup? 4951

@MTechnique: If you have drs notes for every absence then the school cannot do anything.  They will send home letters but they have to do that.

Nobody has more issues than I do with the public school system at times but I hate seeing when people publicly name someone who works in the community schools in a negative way. Seems that could be done privately with the school. I can tell you from experience as I have been employed by, volunteered for, and had many issues off and on with different districts that naming individual workers publicly in a negative light could come back to bite your kid in the butt....:-(As far as weather days, they should have done what Willis ISD did when IKE blew through, given the circumstances just cut the days out totally. They went in-front of the city education board and got permission to just forget those days. If that is not possible they should have just tacked on 2 days at the end of the year or took two of the half days and made them full days, unfortunately no matter what they choose...someone was gonna be upset.Or they could have found 4-6 Saturdays and allowed parents to choose from them for Saturday school. Alot of options they could have chosen from that they did not for some reason or another. Since I homeschool my child had no idea kids got those days off and we worked....LOL 4951

@MTechnique: Just continue to communicate with the school in a positive way about their absences. Out of the 2 or more decades I been involved in the school system before homeschooling I have had about 7 different years where my kid missed too much. Not once were we fined or failed as long as you communicate with the school they usually will work it out.

@Okiedokie: Sadly that is incorrect. 17 of 19 days missed have doctor
notes. Once they get past 18 days missed they have the option to
"retain" the child. Retain is the new way of saying "held back" because
holding a child back could hurt their feelings.Mind you this is a
straight A student, and he is being threatened by the principal with
being held back and forced to repeat a grade because of his constant
illnesses.@Burnsway: We met with the principal, Cant Understand Normal Thinking sums her up. The only things she cares about are maintaining 100% government funding through attendance, and those ever important standardized tests. 4951

@Okiedokie: Oh girl! Don't get me started! I got the threat of being taken to court for truancy for my boy for absences directly related to his disability which is documented on his 504!! I had Dr notes supporting this @MTechnique, but at the campus level, they are too inept to realize that had this gone to court, They would be the ones with egg on their face. They almost had a fist in their face that day lol! When they said that to me, I lost it and ripped them a new one. One more year of this bs...

@MTechnique: Home school is a great option! Only takes about 10 hours a week to keep up with seat work that the schools do in a whole month. I know many 2 working parents who even do it at night or weekends. If you think the school is going to retain your child remove them from the system. In Texas you are not bound by law to send your child to public school. And in Texas when you homeschool you are considered a private school by law and you do NOT have to follow testing. At this point you dont even have to test as a homeschooler although I suggest one every few years to know where your at. But you can do it yourself, you do not have to follow state testing.
