Thinking seriously about upgrading flooring from carpet to wood flooring.  Has anyone had a good experience with a local Kingwood business who they would recommend?   4951

@marilynr:I have always recommended Southwest Flooring Direct, owned by Kurt Cradic.  The website is www.swflooringdirect .com/ I have referred many people to him and I have yet to receive any negative feedback.  Let me know if you have any problems reaching him - I am good friends with him and can get the two of you connected if needed. 4951

You probably need to decide what you want- laminate or 3/4 inch tongue and grove. We have both- I'm partial to the 3/4 inch - it just feels and looks different- But hard to have on a slab unless you build a subfloor. I don't have any experience with any companies- we have installed both ourselves 4951

Do NOT get laminate....it's loud (especially if you have dogs) and it buckles if water is dripped on it.... 4951

I did the new linoleum floor that looks like wood. You can't tell the difference. Since I have dogs it works out great. 4951

But hard to have on a slab unless you build a subfloor. The engineered hardwood floors go right on the slab.  We did three rooms, four years ago and no problems.  It is real wood too, no laminate which I really dislike. 4951

You should have no problem with laminate if it gets wet. Any type of flooring, short of epoxy on concrete, that stays wet will become damaged. The installation cost of real wood, as opposed to laminate is easily twice as much. Also, all doors should be reset or cut, as real wood will be 1 1/2 inch tall if there is a concrete base.  4951

It is definitely more, but so much nicer then laminate, in my opinion. We did not have to cut any doors. 4951

@ET:
But even that is not even close to the 3/4 inch oak- we looked at that and decide 3/4 inch where we can. Somehow it still didn't feel/ look real enough

@DanStanton: On our huge project in OH ( 2 rooms fingered into a central hall it wasn't a problem- we pulled up all the baseboards and laid it up to 1/16" from the wall and installed new baseboards and quarter round. And we cut out around the door jams and slid board under- had to do the same with laminate and tile- not hard if you're handy- but I'm sure you know that Emoticon.I wish I had real oak on the first floor bedroom but the laminate has held up well. It's been in for 8-9 years- never curled up when wet and the dogs have not damaged it. Still I love the look of my oak upstairs- it has personality 4951

@jpgurl; The doors are cut or reset to allow air to flow under the doors when they are shut.There should be a gap 1/2' minimum, 3/4" preferable. 4951
