Opinions?I have noticed that there is a large number of people treating this as an abortion case. Pro-life as I am, I believe that this is a completely different case. The mother is almost dead and life support is an extreme measure. Abortion is an artificial means of terminating a pregnancy, and this is not. Without the intervention of life support the baby would have died naturally. The mother did not want to be on life support and according to an article on Click2Houston, the parents were aware at the time that she was pregnant. The husband is getting a lot of vitriol, when outsiders really don't know what he's going through. There is also the more practical matter of who's going to pick up the high cost of her hospital care. 4951

I agree, the family has asked to turn off the machine. the hospital said she is dead,, so how could they keep the baby alive, with no brain impulse,, basically pumping blood and oxygen to keep it warm. I have told my family if I cannot ever be brought back turn it off, and that's what she said. That's not a right way to live.  These same people who are fighting to keep the body warm, are not the same ones living with the family or are going to support the cost of life. I am not saying that money is better than life, but they just need to stay out of family business. 4951

She was only 14weeks pregnant when she was determined to be brain dead also-at that early stage, the baby would not have been considered "viable."  Her body literally became an incubator.  4951

I think the judge made the right call.  That baby was only alive due to the life support! 4951

Taking the mother off life support is not the same as abortion. No one would be killing either of them by removing artificial life support. They are letting lives continue on with a natural process of living or dying. The baby dying along with the already brain dead mother who dies a natural death, as this will be, is a natural process. There is also evidence that the baby has a deformity of some kind.  Even if they allowed her to remain a human incubator, the baby would not survive outside of the mother once that time came, so the effort to keep her hooked up to bring the baby to term would not have been successful.  This would be a different story if the baby would be able to survive with time.   4951

@donnatella: The deformities, according to what I've read are "distinct" and "severe" (particularly the lower extremities, to the extent that gender couldn't even be determined Emoticon ), but I don't think anyone has made a determination about viability outside of the womb. Either way, I feel for all of those involved, and I'm at least relieved that this family will finally be able to grieve the loss of their loved ones. I could never even begin to judge their decision or this outcome - I can't even fathom being in a situation like this with a loved one. It must literally feel like a never-ending nightmare.

even without that, the hospital either erroneously or not misapplied the law. the law was drawn up to cover pregnant women in a coma or a vegetative state, not braindead. and that is a BIG difference. 4951

I agree with y'all. I am part of a pro-life FB group. Usually they and the commenters are respectful in regards to whatever news or topics are posted. However this news went viral and whoever is responsible posted about the mom being taken off life support. I was shocked (and saddened) by some of the vitriol directed at the husband. Not all comments were bad, but the ones that were were downright mean (such as calling the husband a "monster" or saying that he only wants to 'pull the plug' is so he can start dating! Why do the stupid and the loud take over everything). Some are calling it an abortion and that just makes no sense. An abortion is a surgical or medicinal means of terminating a pregnancy. The life support was just delaying what would have happened naturally. I tried making that argument on FB but the majority can't see that. Emoticon 4951

Thank God the judge decided the way he did!!  I am a Christian and a prolife supporter, but this case was very difficult to say the least.  I am also a nurse and I see so much suffering experienced by patients from family, with the very best intentions, to keep the loved one alive and just don't realize the suffering that the person is enduring to be kept "alive".This case was so different because  the husband and wife did actually have THE conversation about "what if" and the fact that she was pregnant.  There should be NO talk about abortion involving this particular case.  It was not abortion by any means!!  It was just her time, unfortunately.  4951

I had to stop reading the Facebook comments of this particular pro life page's news feed...I presented my argument as I have stated here, but there are so many misinformed or downright cruel comments that they almost anger me. 4951

Hospitals need to stop keeping people alive after they are "brain dead" altogether. Brain dead is dead. Coma cases and people left in a vegetative state are a different story, but if there is no activity in the brain, nothing will bring you back.
I hope this family finally finds closure. 4951

@fcabanski: The people who were against taking her off of life support were saying that the baby is dying "slowly and painfully" (or was--I'm assuming it must be dead by now). However, though I know nothing about medical science, I would think that it could have been happening with the mother on life support, anyway. I can't remember the medical term at this moment, but the state of the mother's body was affecting the baby whether or not she was on life support or not. It's still being treated as an abortion case by some, it really is quite sad how some people are so quick to judge.
