Can someone tell me what the symptoms are of the flu that is going around?  My son came home not feeling well yesterday and has continued into today.  I don't think it's the flu though.  4951

Something is going around that is just like the flu. It's obviously not one of the flus they check for when running the tests. Just my personal opinion. I had it, went to clinic for the flu test; it came back negative. I had a flu shot in September. ALL the symptoms were flu symptoms, not a cold and not sinus. I've had flu several times over my life and this was a flu. 4951

When I tested positive for it last year, I had a fever, bad cough and my body hurt if anyone even touched me.  Luckily I didn't have the vomiting that others had.I would get him into the doctor as soon as you can.  If it is the flu you only have a small period of time to start the medication. 4951

No way of knowing for sure unless you get a nose swab..the faster the better because tamaflu is an excellent working anti viral drug(very expensive though) when used properly but you only have around 24 hours to get in and get it to have it work.I thought we all had the flu too as our signs matched it perfectly but our test came back negative. They thought strep even though the quick test came back negative and treated us all for strep..2 days and hubby and my kid were 100% better.Meds didnt work on me, given my past history of meningitis my body doesn't respond well to normal doses of antibiotics. Mine turned into severe bronchitis and was about 2 days from pneumonia when I went back in.Got two huge very painful shots and am on a z pack, steroids and breathing treatments(I own a nebulizer) and do seem to feel better but Im in a lot of pain from all the coughing. With all the nasty crap out there I would not wait to get checked out..go in have the test ran and get treated...these bugs are nasty this year! 4951

@Burnsway: Och, Och, Och!  Those antibiotic shots really hurt!!  So sorry you had to get them, but it does give you a really good loading dose quicker then the pills.  Hope you feel better soon.

@doddlebugThe CDC just reported that the rapid flu tests that the doctors are giving are not reliable.  The rapid flu tests are giving false negatives when people really do have the flu!  Here is the link to the article:http://www.nbcnews.com/health/dont-rely-quick-flu-tests-cdc-tells-doctors-2D11988742 4951

@calliecat: with us the doc decided to make sure by drawing blood, with elevated white blood count and negative on the nose swab she ruled out flu because its viral and you dont get elevated white blood count unless its bacterial. Even with all that I still question what I have, kid and hubby were up and going in no time but what I have has landed me on my @ss good. But flu is flu and has to run its course so not much they can do other than tamaflu which doesnt cure the flu, just makes it shorter and easier to handle. been a bad season for almost everyone all they way around.

@Nurse3: My 8 yr old had to have one too because her white blood count was 1900 and the doc was a bit worried. She limped around for 24 hours rubbing her tooshie......LOL......took 3 of us to hold her down and that just killed me given her past restraint abuse from a past area dentist. I knew it had to be the worst feeling for her...:-( But 1 minute and it was all over and she got better fast..almost 24 hours she was doing really good.

I had strep back in August and had to be on several rounds of antibiotics and had ended in the hospital for a few day with another round of antibiotics and steroids! 4951
