Well I took my car to get an oil change; they informed me my transmission was leaking. I told them the mechanic said it was the oil that was leaking due to them not doing it right the last time. So the guy at the Cales car wash said no, it is in fact the transmission. So I went back to the mechanic on yesterday and related the message to him. He did another thorough check and said it was not the transmission it was in fact the distributor cap that was leaking. I told him didn't you tell me last time it was the O-ring that had something to do with the distributor that was leaking? He said yes, he said well now it is the distributor. I said this is the same leak I have been having since my first oil change before this one when the service guy said it was the transmission and you said no then it was the O-ring.
I'm confused and asking the guys here on KDC, could it really be the distributor this time? He priced some for me on yesterday and they all start at $200.00 and over. I just don't want to be paying for something only to find out later that was never really the problem. I think my mechanic should have checked the distributor the last time I came to him with the concern of the leak to begin with. I don't want to question my mechanic but then to I don't want to be ignorant when it comes to my car.

First off, I wouldn't trust any mechanic that can't tell the difference between transmission fluid and crankcase oil.  Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is red.  Crankcase oil is clear or slightly greenish-yellow but may be black depending on age. AT fluid can turn black if it have been seriously overheated.  4951

@Retired_Engineer: Thanks, then it's not my transmission, so it must be oil coming from the distributor cap. Emoticon 4951

ok I am confused, distributor is electrical.  how would the cap have oil in it unless the rings aren't seated properly where the distributor connects to the engine?   I'm not a mechanic but husband is/was.  I have worked on my own vehicles all my life.  never seen oil in a distributor.  4951

Take it by G&S on northpark and have them check it out. They look at it for free, ask for Michael. He's done a lot of work on cars for us and is good. He's young so don't let that fool you, he knows what he's talking about 4951

@angiekaye:  I suspect she meant to say the distributor housing.

@Retired_Engineer: I think that is correct, I almost posted carbarator until I called him to make sure what it was again that needed replacing. I don't know anyhing about a car other than where to stick the key and drive it. All the technical stuff is out of my area..... Most women just can't remember all this stuff unless it's broken down into things we can see. 4951

@bubbleyes72:  My wife is pretty much the same about cars.  However, over the years, I've taught her to let me know if any warning lights come on, if she hears any strange noises, if the car acts differently, of if she smells anything.  I've gotten some false alerts but better safe than sorry!@angiekay:  some distributors have o-rings that prevent the housing from leaking externally AND have an o-ring to prevent oil from entering the distributor cap.  The former is the typical culprit.

@Retired_Engineer: That's what he replaced when I first took my car to him with the concern of the leak, so why he didn't check everything is beyond me. Even after I took it to him and a few days later it was still leaking I took it back to him and he told me it was the oil AGAIN! I just hope he got it right this time or I may be on the look for another mechanic. Emoticon 4951

@bubbleyes72:  I think I'd start looking for another mechanic.  If yours can't tell the difference between an internal and an external leak, he's not a mechanic.

As women we need to educate ourselves.  This is why men ( no offense to the good guys) take advantage of us in situations such as this.   Nice I was the only girl in the family so I learned quite a lot of boy stuff. Emoticon 4951

I've always had my wife deal with mechanics on her car.  She would call me to ask if something sounded right, but I had her deal with the people.  When we first moved here almost 21 years ago, some of the mechanics tried to brush her off and asked to speak to her husband.  She stood her ground and make them deal with her.  I'm really adamant about teaching her how to deal with people.  Her father married her mother when she was 15.  He did all the bills, went shopping, etc.  All she had to do was clean house, cook, and make babies.  When my wife was in high school and her father ran off with another woman, her mother didn't know how to drive, how to write a check, and many other things that an adult should know how to do. My wife has come a long way!  Actually, if we have an issue with a bill, I prefer to let her handle it.  She has good people skills and will have the person willingly help her.  If I handled it, I would end up yelling and cursing. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: What a jerk he was, I hate to hear when men do this to women....But I agree with you, we as women need to know when to hold our own. 4951
