...If the weather ends up being what the "experts" are saying? Meaning, roads won't be treated, school will probably close...

I'm not scared to drive in it, if needed, just need to know what to expect as to how it's all handled down here! Also, when will the schools make the decision? Tonight - middle of the night - early morning? 4951

Do you think Humble ISD will cancel school for Friday? And if they do, when would they announce it?

@TexasBarbieDoll: www.wrh.noaa.gov/mes owest/gmap.php?map=h gxDallas is already in the mid-30s, with the freezing line just to the north of the metroplex area there.  Winds here are backing to the north and dew points are beginning to fall, so the cool air is on the way.  Radar overlay shows light showers already developing in places.  The timing of the precip with the advancing lower dew point air is what introduces the high uncertainty.  Emoticonrecipitation falling through a cold, drier air mass can wet-bulb effect the air to a colder temperature though and this is where the precip can turn to the frozen type.  This area should be down to near freezing by around 7 or so this evening but non-elevated roadways will still take some time to freeze up.

Sorry, I don't know what's up with the smiley with the tongue sticking out, and the link at the bottom did not paste intact.  I meant to link to the tabular forecast data at the bottom of the forecast page.  This provides a better timeline as to when to expect various conditions to change and the extent of duration. 4951

Hurry to the grocery store and grab everything left on the shelf.  Do not be afraid to tackle the old people, you can show no mercy. Then come home and try to figure out what you will do with 10 loaves of bread.Emoticon

@Fallon:

If it gets icy and you don't know how to drive in it- stay home. If you have to go out then put more distance between you and the car in front. Don't floor the gas pedal, or stomp on the brakes, take more time for lane changes, don't slow down on a "hill", pay attention, use common sense and it'll be ok.
It'll be a short event- melting by tomorrow afternoon 4951

Confidence is increasing for a freezing rain/sleet event in
the Houston area starting late this evening in the far northern and western
suburbs and then for the immediate Houston area southward during the early
morning hours.

This will likely have a significant impact on your Friday
morning commute.   Most of the road surface temperatures in the
Houston area will be much too warm for any potential ice accumulations.
However, any exposed elevated surfaces (bridges, overpasses and flyovers) will
quickly glaze over as temperatures approach freezing or lower and will be
extremely hazardous.   This will include but are not limited to some
of the major interchanges joining 45, 10 and 59 with the Sam Houston
Tollway.   In the past, even minor accumulations of ice here have
resulted in total closures.   TDOX has been applying an anti-freeze
solution since last night to many of the area’s bridges and overpasses and they
are continuing those operations today.  4951
