I heard about this a while back,, and just got reminded.you can do this with $1 or $5 or what ever... I'm going to try with $5Every time you get a $5 bill,, stash it. At least once a day, you can do it more if you want. Every time you get a $5 bill save it, don't touch it for a year, unless you have an emergency.  so if you go get coffee in the morning and they give you a $5 save that,, later during the day if you get lunch or dinner, you can save another $5. Its okay to forget once and a while.I wonder how much I could save just by doing this. I just need a special place to hide it from myself, and others. 4951

Besides contributing to my 401k, one thing I did to save money was to automatically transfer money from my paycheck into a savings account.  I started small ($20/check), but every time I got a raise, I put a larger amount away.  If you never actually see that money, you don't realize that you are doing without it.  However, if you start using that extra money, then it's harder to put it into circulation.Someone once told me (I think this is how it went):  Your lifestyle will always grow such that you spend all the money you take home. So even if you get $100/month raise, within about 6 months, you will find you have spent that extra money. 4951

My car payment money goes to the credit union that financed it. I've never stopped the auto transfer. It's been a year, $500 a month. Yea! It's rainy day and vacation money. The car will probably need repairs at some point. 4951

I bank with Bank of America and with every debit transaction, they round up and put the difference in my savings. It's called Keep the Change program. 4951

@jls2: I have been trying to remember which bank did that. Wish Wells Fargo would do it.

Hubby used to do this with his credit union. Every paycheck $25 or so would go into our Christmas club account. By Christmas we were always set. We actually miss doing that lol 4951

We pay bills with michaels check play with mine. We both contribute max to 401k. Our investment money doesnt get touched at all unless we are buying a house or car. Not even if we a re running short and REALLY want to eat out. Amex gets used once every couple of months just to keep it open.

Its amazing how money accumulates when you spend less than you make.

I also round up, but I use 20 cents. This averages out. I used to use 10 cents, but it got a bit much. Rounding  really makes a difference. 4951
