My freshman daughter earned a 4.0 her first semester in college, was named captain of the volleyball team, and then made the all-region team.  Of course, she is transferring, but that's a whole other story altogether. My other freshman daughter made all A's for the semester at her high school. If I didn't know any better, I swear they couldn't be my children. Then you look at them, with their good looks, and it's clearly obvious that they are.  DUH!!!! 4951

Very cool!  At what college does she play?I coached for a long time and know that balancing the requirements of being on a college team and academics is tough. 4951

@JaxYour daughter is someone to be proud of!  You hear so much about the troublemaker kids and not enough about the ones who are doing so well!  Congrats, Dad! 4951

Actually, I hope I've raised 2 "quite the young woman" daughters.  They are both something else....I'll tell you that.  After all they've been through, it's quite the feat. The Good Lord has HUGE plans for them, that's for sure. 4951

That's incredible!! Alright, so what's the secret?! I mean, my oldest is only in first grade and he's been doing great since coming back from break, but he was starting to get lax before break and grades were suffering a bit.  How do you keep that sense of "plug away and working hard" going in them? He's a good kid, wants to please and do well, but he just doesn't listen to instructions well, can get frustrated too easily, and has trouble focusing at times. What can I do to help him with all of this (outside of having a quiet space to do homework and practicing on the listening skills.) Seriously - I asked him, on Sunday, to go into the house and get my newspaper from the dining room table. He brought me out a stack of magazines from the kitchen counter. *smack head* 4951

No secret. I take interest in their academics and activities. I am a mainstay in their lives. I discipline. I spank (use to when they were younger anyway). I pick my battles but I don't let them get away with hal*****.  If they are going to do something, it's all in or else there won't be another activity.I've stressed that being a leader and not a follower is expected. That organizations are mandatory and that their JOB is to be a student.  That means, as long as they maintain a B or better average and participate in extra-curricular activities, I will provide for them financially (car, clothing, etc...)Here's the kicker:  I stick to what I say.  There are NO idle threats.  They know the consequences...that's why it took my oldest 9 extra months to get her drivers license.
