What is with all the school shootings over the past several years, why does this seem to becoming an epidemic? Back in my school days you didn't have to worry about this type situation. The worst you saw was a good ol fight between 2-3 people male and/or female. School is suppose to be a safe place, right?  The shooting this morning in Roswell is just another reminder we have a serious problem, it's obviously spilled over into malls and movie theaters. Look at the kids who are behind some of this, young males with major social issues... amongst other things. What has sparked such senseless violence?   4951

There wasn't social media bullying either. If you got picked on it did not end up On the net for the entire school to see. Kids have it hard with camera phones and how instant it is to put something up for the world to see. 4951

I also think the immediate attention stuff like that gets with social media, cell phones, camera phones, etc makes us more aware of shooting, molesters, murders, etc. All of that stuff happened before but we weren't inundanted with stories about it like now. There was a shooting at my high school when I was a student in 1992. But it was only news in my city and maybe a few surrounding cities. Now if it had happened, everyone all over would know. I also agree that kids these days are overmedicated. So many are on drugs, legal and illegal. 4951

@Zephard: As said I believe its various reasons and I do believe over bullying, not the typical kids will be kids and mean at times bullying, but the out right harassment type bullying we have these days play a part in many of these shootings, psychotic drugs play a part, mental illness, no consequences....etc.....it all plays a part and many times that bullying comes from a staff member, not just other kids. We had a murder a while back, kid (high school) shot a teacher in the morning before school was open ....yes very wrong but later revealed that teacher had abused him.I read an article based on a study that 1 in 4 kids will be abused ...physically and/or mentally from another student or school staff in their 12 years of school. Add that to the type of behavioral drugs we shove down the kids throat, maybe a bad home life among some other things and ignore all signs that things are not right you have a for sure ticking time bomb thats gonna go off once in a while.

How much of the gory video games and tv do you think plays into this? Seems like kids are desensitized very early on from some of this garbage out there and can't seem to decipher between real and fantasy.. 4951

@mrsames77: I think its happening more but when we were kids when you had an off student he was admitted to a "special school" Not drugged up and sent back out into society trusting they will stay medicated....every single school shooting that I know of was done by someone on these drugs or someone who stopped the drugs without anyone knowing. I truly believe some of these drugs work when taken properly but too many families treat it like antibiotics....hey he/she is doing better and stop the drugs without a doc knowing, getting off some of these drugs the wrong way can turn a pretty sane person into a psychotic demon.....They are very dangerous cocktails...:-(

@NewToTexas: If its thrown into the mixture of other things listed it can add to the danger but someone sane isnt gonna go bat **** crazy just by playing violent video games.

@Burnsway: I totally agree. And I feel VERY lucky because I took my son into his pediatrician at about the age of 5 or 6 and told him I thought he needed some kind of medication because he bounced off the walls, had some tics and didn't seem to be able to concentrate. That pediatrician, who happens to be Dr. Mark T. Smith at TCPA, told me he does not like medicating his kids and to just give it time. He would outgrow the tics and calm down. And he did and I am so GRATEFUL Smith didn't put him on anything. I really feel like I may have dodged a bullet there..

I have to agree with Burnsway about the video games. My husband played Mortal Kombat every day of his young life and he has not shot or killed or maimed one person. But he also was not depressed or bullied or medicated. I think there has to be other extenuating circumstances. 4951

In addition to all of the above mentioned factors, the news media turns these murders into instant infamous celebrities.  I have said it before, but if the media would stop publishing the name (and any personal information) of the shooters, those looking for "fame" would resist the urge.  Only refer to the shooters as "Newtown shooter" or "Roswell shooter", etc.  Never publish a picture of them or any of their family/friends.  No published interviews with people that knew him/her. 4951

If I had to pick one only one cause of increasing school violence, I would have to say the lack of traditional family values. When we were kids, most people lived where there extended family lived. Grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins all played a role in raising children. There was strength and stability in that. Now, we all live somewhere else because of jobs, half of us are divorced and are disconnected from the kids. Most of us do an dang good job of raising our children, but it's no easy task. Not everyone is cut out for it. It's too easy to substitute convenience for quality.
Children can not raise themselves, and a school or the media are not feasible substitutes. Oh, how I miss the good old days... 4951
